Did you know that, according to the US Census Bureau, 6 in 10 young adults live within 10 miles of where they grew up and 8 in 10 live within 100 miles of where they grew up. If, as statistics indicate, we do not stray far from where we grow up and also have little control over the place where we grow up, shouldn’t we have an understanding of how that place, its culture and resources, or lack thereof, impact our lives? Looking forward to learning more at this discussion.
A discussion with the authors of a compelling new study of poverty, "The Injustice of Place," will be free and open to the public 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in the William T. Young Library Auditorium. Kathryn J. Edin, Ph.D., H. Luke Shaefer, Ph.D., and Timothy J. Nelson, Ph.D., will discuss their research with the audience and a panel of students from the University of Kentucky Martin School of Public Policy and Administration and UK Appalachian Center. https://lnkd.in/g4qXsyYW

Anyone who doesn’t recognize that there is a crisis in our elite educational institutions isn’t paying attention. Per Bloomberg, “many of America’s top colleges had become Soviet-like in their lack of viewpoint diversity. As I noted, 96% of donations from Ivy League faculty and staff in the 2012 presidential election went to Barack Obama, while only 4% went to another Harvard alumnus, Mitt Romney.” There is obviously great irony in the fact elite universities place such emphasis on DEI at the exclusion of ideas and ideology. Elite universities have become monomaniacal bastions of illiberalism. You can help fight campus illiberalism by supporting Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression , Heterodox Academy and University of Austin https://lnkd.in/gi3J3RBq

So you hear it from us all the time, how about from one of the most respected voices in this space, Rosie Clayton, who joined Alex Hughes, Tim Riches and Matt Hyde OBE for our panel for Anthropy UK. 40% in our most deprived areas persistently absent from education should be crisis bells going off! We have committed to continue this discussion post-event and will be inviting those engaged in our collective organisations to build more momentum towards meaningful progress. What do you think about when you consider at least 1 in 5 students aren't even attending school regularly, let alone benefiting from it?! #StayCurious #RethinkAssessment #educationreform
