This is the speedometer on my mother’s new car. She’s 71. Notice a few things: - The highest speed limit in the U.S. that I could find is 85mph on Texas state highway 130. That means that over half the speedometer is dedicated to speeds that would be illegal anywhere in the nation. - The unnecessarily large speed range makes hugely consequential variations in speed difficult to discern. When you strike a pedestrian at 32mph, they have a 75% survival rate. But at 42, the survival rate drops to 50%. That means a 10mph difference doubles your odds of killing someone. But look how little distance separates 32mph and 42mph. The width of the meter itself takes up a whole 5mph! This means that as you’re driving, the tipping point of human survivability is depicted as a mere sliver of space on the speedometer. #visionzero #yimby #waroncars
