For the past several years I've been writing articles for KERRWIL MEDIA LIMITED. When I was initially asked in 2016 to offer some insights for the readers of Electrical Industry News Week, I really didn't know why anyone would want to read them. I'm just an average person leading an average life. But I guess that was the point. To connect with people across the spectrum and discuss experiences that many of us can relate to. To bare parts of the soul and let people know "When you're having a tough time, I hear you". Prior to writing the first feature, I sat down with Line Goyette to answer a series of career related questions. I reread it today, and keeping in mind it was written before COVID, the rise in inflation, huge housing cost increases and a lot of the new grid demand, much of our discussion still rings true, particularly this: "I also draw inspiration from reading about history. Civilization has come so far in a relatively short period of time, so I never worry that we can’t solve the problems that exist in our present day. If people can develop mass agriculture and just in time delivery systems that allow me to eat fresh lettuce in a Canadian January, put a man on the moon and prevent polio, we can do whatever we need to". I almost didn't get this job Back in May 2023, I was still in SHRDC for my Solar GCPV Design Course. 2 weeks before I finished the course, I was already doing job hunting on all job application websites. And I found the one I really wanted to work at. So, I applied for it. But I didn't give them a call. Because I'm not ready for an interview as I'm still occupied with my course. After I finished the course, I still haven't gotten any feedback from the company. So, I started a real job hunting. I search for their numbers. I found the company number and I gave it a call. But, no answer. I kept searching. And I managed to find the Manager and Director's number. Again, I gave them a call. This time, I got an answer. But the manager said that the position was already occupied. I didn't give up, I convinced them. And I mentioned that I already attended the solar course. They changed their mind and called me for an interview. Long story short, I managed to secure the job. And I'm still happy to work here and looking forward to it for a couple more years. And today, I found out that the reason why they didn't call me in the first place was because they didn't notice my job application due to loads of applications at that time. Had I not given them the call, would I get this job? This shows the importance of a call during job hunting. If I never ask, the answer will always be no. Do not be afraid to contact your future employer. This can make a big difference. ✅ After you submit your resume, give them a call to alert them ✅ After you finish your interview, give them a call to thank them for the opportunity. ✅ Then, once a week, give them a call to follow up. Do not give up as long as they don't officially reject you. #career #engineer #solar
