Now that we are stateside, it was good to catch up with Seth WilliamsBuddy Pendergast, Hub HubbardMackenzie Warner & Gilberto at Patagonia's Wetsuit Forge (tribute to Yvon Chouinard’s blacksmith days and Patagonia origins).
I was keen on learning first-hand how years of learnings from wetsuit repair (and not just theirs) influenced the new Patagonia Regulator wetsuit design that is getting awesome reviews. And no, the Yulex foam is unchanged from other Patagonia wetsuits, so it's not the natural rubber foam.
I am a big fan of repairing garments to extend their life. So watching Gilberto and Dulce, expert’s at their craft, easily cut out damaged panels on a wetsuit and replace it with an upgraded panel with ease was cool. I'm also a big fan of modular designs like removable panels that increase accessibility, making repairs easier, thereby reducing downtime for the consumer/surfer, and extending life of the garment.
Still, no one wants to replace the lower back seat panel which is large (relatively - no body shaming there) and makes for a more expensive repair.
Hence, the Wetsuit Forge made prototypes and tested (surf) different panels for comfort and durability.
To improve stretch, they switched out recycled polyester for recycled nylon (again same Yulex foam).
To improve thermal regulation in these cold waters (just me?), they changed the structural integrity from flatlock to GBS seams in the chest panel and an improved zipper.
And based on the reviews, all these iterative changes have been applauded.
So, stay curious folks… always things to learn and improve on.

This Collection draws on the beauty and cultural significance of South Africa's natural heritage.A legend that embodies the essence of nature, heritage, traditional handcrafting and the unique identity of the region as our natural assets. It emphasizes the importance of preserving these values for future generations and the deep connection between humans and the natural world.
The signature handcrafting , colours , patterns and prints are inspired by the ultimate muse ,mother nature , the creative’s go-to source. A folktale where gods and goddesses thrive peacefully alongisde the most iconic and majestic wildlife species in South Africa such as the leopard, zebra and giraffe .They are celebrated in our traditional crafts of beading , painting ,fabric dyeing, braiding in garment making.
It is story of how both heritage and nature contribute to our livelihoods as they are passed on from one generation to the next and it is our duty to preserve them due to their cultural and historic value. In line with the Sun Goddess DNA, it continues to celebrate our unique S. African identity where what one wears says a lot of who they are in the authentic sense
It is a true testament to the notion that in every walk with nature one receives far more than one seeks and that when we look deep into nature suddenly, we understand everything . They say that nature holds the key to all our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and spiritual wellbeing. It is not a place but a home where the imperfections are just perfect .This is a reminder that fashion isn't just about aesthetics for the sake of it but can also serve as a canvas for expressing deeper values, profound connections, culture, heritage and traditions.
