What can a recognizable brand achieve? And what if it can be enhanced with a strong collective mark?
Producers of nuts, pastries, cosmetics, and more from the Bicol region in the Philippines have clearly understood the power of branding.
All their products revolve around the Pili tree, a tropical tree thriving in volcanic soil, and deeply rooted in the region’s history. The artisans came together to create a collective mark, "Bikol Pili," along with a logo reflecting their community, to ensure their products stand out and are distinguished from their competitors.
Through this shared brand, they have also committed to ensuring the quality of their products. There’s something remarkable about a unified, shared brand where stakeholders celebrate their cultural heritage, promote community pride, and become stronger together in the global market.
With the support of WIPO, the National IP Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Pili community in the Bicol Region, represented by the Orgullo Kan Bicol Association (OKB), the producers are ensuring quality through their new shared brand. By adding value to their products and positioning themselves better in the market, they are not only boosting their competitiveness but also their visibility across the globe.

As a program coordinator of the TETFAIR initiative, one of the most interesting things in this role is having access to a constant stream of knowledge from experts during brainstorming sessions like this. These sessions are not merely discussions but vibrant exchanges of insights and expertise.
The TETFAIR program thrives on innovation and collaborative synergy. It has been a catalyst for transformative ideas and groundbreaking projects.
This team is addressing the challenging issue of "Adire" production by reducing the dewaxing time.
In case you didn't know, there is currently a high demand for "Adire" (a traditional Yoruba tie-dye textile). This demand is driven by a renewed interest in indigenous fashion and cultural heritage.
Local "Adire" production, primarily centered in areas like Abeokuta and Ibadan, has struggled to keep up with this demand. Despite efforts to boost local production, including government initiatives to promote adire as part of school uniforms and official attire, the influx of imported adire fabrics, particularly from countries like China, has filled the gap created by this high demand.
As the country endeavors to reduce its reliance on imports, optimizing local production of Adire is essential. I am eager to witness the remarkable outcomes that this team will achieve by the end of the program.
