It took me 8 years to fully reflect on my own journey. Now? I can accept my mental health struggles as part of who I am rather than dwell on the guilt and shame. My hope is that by sharing, I can help others do the same and most importantly, seek help when needed. If you’re currently going through mental health challenges, know that you’re not alone. Seek help, lean on your support network, and remember that it’s okay to speak up. Don’t let guilt or shame hold you back. To those who are helping someone through mental health challenges, educate yourself, listen non-judgmentally and approach mental health with compassion and understanding. Together we can break the stigma, one conversation at a time.

We know social media can have a negative impact on our mental health, but when used appropriately can also help connect people and combat feelings of loneliness or social isolation. Although social media comes with risks, it can connect people to their community and also to resources that can support them before and during mental health related crises, including suicide. #SuicidePreventionMonth helps bring awareness to all measures that reduce the likelihood of someone reaching the point of a suicide crisis. Positive affirmations can help someone combat negative thoughts and provide a much-needed boost. - Share Resources – Sometimes, the best way to help is to share information about where to find professional support, such as counseling services or mental health hotlines. - Be Patient and Understanding – Everyone has their own pace in life and healing. Show that you understand without pushing them to act cheerful or "get better" quickly. Be a listener to those who have been feeling depressed or down lately. Raise awareness or promote suicide prevention. Be kinder today, and show empathy to everyone who needs it. And to everyone who is suffering in silence, trying to bear everything alone, please give yourself a chance to reach out to the people you trust and talk about what you've been feeling. Be a little braver today. Remind yourself to never give up on yourself, and seek help from anyone, or even from mental health professionals if needed. It is important to note and recognize that Bullies exist at every level in life, even in the workplace; not just secondary school. The day aims to help people open up and be honest about mental health, without the fear and stigma often attached to the topic. It can be daunting to express personal struggles and because of this, many people keep everything bottled up. By opening up, the likelihood of the person seeking help increases, which can be crucial to the healing process.
