A few days ago (18/8/24) I introduced you to London-based Laundryheap, the self-styled ‘world’s leading on-demand laundry and dry-cleaning service’, whose acquisitive international expansion strategy recently saw a 14th country market added to the list. Like so many #ODCS (on-demand consumer services) startups, Laundryheap loses money. I wanted to delve deeper to test whether founder Deyan D. (Dimitrov)'s business model could ever make a real and sustainable profit. You’ll recall that Laundryheap doesn’t do the laundry itself; they use local laundry businesses to do the work. Like almost all ODCS’s, you ‘demand’ the service through an app to schedule a pickup and delivery slot and, of course, pay. Does it work? Yes, it does. Is it good value for money? Not in my case. Could it make a sustainable profit? I don’t think so. I tried Laundryheap this week with some bedlinen. The total came to £53.59 including ‘free’ delivery and a £1.99 ‘Service Fee’ (covers ‘Collaboration with Premium Cleaning Partners’, ‘Professional Handling’, ‘Quality Assurance’, and ‘Continuous Customer Support’, don’t you know). Sure enough, a chap driving a Zipcar van turned up in the allotted timeslot to pick up our laundry  and it was returned as scheduled a couple of days later by a man in a white van (unbranded). Job done, and done well. The Laundryheap app told me that my laundry would be done by its local partner in Hanger Lane. It didn’t take me long to work out who that most likely was, so I phoned them to find out their pricing. The same load, including free pickup and delivery (there’s no ‘service charge’), would have cost me £39.00. And they would have done it in 48 hours, which is the service I chose from Laundryheap. So let’s try and ‘unpack’ (in-vogue term for ‘break down’, apparently) Laundryheap’s margin on my bedlinen. Dimitrov claims that Laundryheap’s B2C service (he also does B2B and B2B2C) has reached a 39% gross margin (I will assume that ‘cost of sale’ is purely the charge the partner charges to do the laundry). If so, my bill should have generated a gross profit of £17.42 (exc. VAT). It also implies that the partner laundry charged him £27.24, which seems a credible ‘wholesale’ price given they don’t have to pick up and deliver, carry sales & marketing costs, etc etc. Dimitrov’s £17.42 gross profit has to cover a share of operational costs including drivers, vans, sales, marketing, premises etc; and platform costs such as R&D, hosting etc. Then there’s the cost acquisitions of course. All I can tell you is that if I book an Uber to collect my laundry and take it to Laundryheap’s local partner and then bring it back, it would cost around £10 each way. My gut feel is that Laundryheap’s numbers don’t work. I will carry on delving. PS. By the way, my closest local laundry would charge me £31.00 for the same load – and they also collect and deliver free.
