Attention, incoming summer interns! We’ve reached out to leaders across Koch, including those who were once interns themselves, to gather advice just for you. Today, we’re sharing insights from our Vice President of Human Resources, Cara Chennault-Reid. She shares three tips as you prepare for your internship: • Ask questions • Embrace the journey • Understand and apply Principle Based Management™ With these tips in mind, we’re excited to see how you’ll use your unique skills and abilities to shape your paths.

The interns have arrived! So many companies and organizations have been posting about their interns joining them for the summer and it is wonderful to see the opportunities these young people will have to gain hands-on experience and insight. Managing and mentoring these interns takes time and preparation. Their success, observations and key takeaways are directly related to you as a mentor. Take time to ensure the tasks -- big or small -- they are assigned are meaningful. Don't just ask them to do something, be sure to explain why it is helpful or needed. If you send them to a conference or to participate in a webinar, explain why it's of value and what is expected in return. Take time to listen to them. Create an environment that is open to their questions. Ask for their input. Their insight might surprise you. Give them feedback, not just through email, but also through meaningful conversations. Review your company values and ask yourself, am I reflecting these values in my actions as I mentor others? If you had an amazing or challenging experience as an intern, what is your advice to others to help make this summer experience meaningful for both the intern as well as the company?

Looking back, summer vacations were always a highlight—not just for the break, but for the chance to work and earn some extra cash.
