Sharing facilities, providing bursaries and paying their share of tax - private schools, as charitable trusts, contribute to society and promote education, social mobility, aspiration and high standards. Private schools and parents choosing to send their child to a private school contribute to society. Rapid implementation of an untested and weakly explored VAT policy threatens all schools, SEN pupils and many more. We won’t solve inequality or educational underfunding by taxing the private sector more than the state sector. We are better working together more rather than taxing one sector more than another.

💰 Funding 💰 A recurring challenge I have when accessing funding for OUR GOAL CIC is that many grant providers state that their funds cannot be used on programmes, projects and interventions which take place when there should be statutory provision (i.e. during the school day). The problem is that statutory provision does not always meet the needs of all. I believe delivery of interventions during the school day is crucial to reach some of the young people who need it most. Firstly, because it engages those who would not otherwise access the intervention. At OUR GOAL CIC, we particularly work with inactive teens who are unlikely to join a sports club because they have negative experiences of physical activity and don’t see it as a space for them. Secondly, because delivery during the school day removes barriers to participation. This is especially true when working with young people who face access barriers to engaging in after-school clubs such as travel and cost. School-based interventions allow us to physically get to where the young people are, when they're there, and work with them to make a positive difference. #funding #teens

We stand with Brett! Brett Redelinghuys needs very little introduction to anyone who has played water polo in the last 25 years. Brett can only be described as a zealot, a disciple of water polo, a man who has sacrificed job opportunities, family gatherings, and ultimately his wealth and mental health for the sport. In the 2021/22 SSA Annual Report, Alan Fritz says, 'It must be noted that water polo is continuing its upward trajectory and needs to professionalize as a matter of urgency. It is clear we have dissidents in water polo who think they own the sport. Swimming South Africa will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour within our ranks, and non-compliant behaviour will be dealt with in terms of the organization's constitution.' Safe to say, when “disciplining” Brett, Swim South Africa failed its constitution, its agreed processes, and procedures, never gave him a fair hearing, never considered, unpacked, nor debated, in an open forum, what he had proposed. His proposal had followed SSA process, was the output/process of a working group - WaterPolo4Change, had engaged stakeholders, had received over 600 'yays' in a snap survey from various water polo groups. For his troubles, as the frontman of WaterPolo4Change, Brett received a 10-year ban from all things water polo. A man who has done nothing but serve the game and the water polo community, never receiving a cent in remuneration, never claiming office, nor public recognition. In essence, he suggested that the people of water polo elect representatives to run the sport, that the players and proponents of water polo hold these elected reps accountable for results. This we suspect is at the heart of SSA objection. Why follow democratic processes when you already have ultimate control (inserted by the ANC) and rule over your minions without oversight? He proposed a change to the SSA Constitution to allow Water Polo to manage itself while retaining its affiliation to SSA/WA (this has been done SUCCESSFULLY in other countries and is not unique to South Africa). He suggested a Non-Profit Pty with an appointed executive to run SA Polo (strategic/ long term focus) accountable to the provincial and club representatives. When comparing his proposed with the 2021/22 and 2022/23 Annual Reports, it appears that SSA and Brett's proposals are not significantly at odds with one another. The key distinction lies not in the "what", but rather the "how." For over 30 years, SSA has sought to dictate the operational methods of water polo without consulting its constituants or considering their objections and concerns. There has been no effort to reach consensus or understand the challenges they face in meeting SSA’s demands, showing little regard for those affected. This is why we assert, "enough is enough, we stand with Brett.".

There is one of inDrive's non-profit programs called "Supernovas". In small towns and settlements, we rent a field, hire and train coaches, give them a computer system for training, provide equipment and balls. We enroll children from 6 to 12 years old and teach them to play football for free in an atmosphere of maximum support and kindness. Without yelling, pressure, and humiliation, as it happens in such clubs. We believe that in small settlements, where children are often unfairly deprived of access to sports clubs, such a program will help them get involved in sports and be happier. Supernovas clubs are already operating in six countries: Kazakhstan, Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, Chile, and Colombia and we are expanding the program in new countries. In Kazakhstan, clubs are open in 9 small towns and settlements. I really like this project; it has a lot of warmth and love. And the children are very satisfied - NPS is almost 100%. To enhance the impact of the project, we want to conduct an experiment in collaboration with the education departments to introduce the same approach to physical education classes in schools in Kazakhstan. In them, as in other post-Soviet countries, sometimes an outdated approach is still preserved, with not very friendly treatment of children, lining them up by height, yelling, and pressure. If successful, this will be implemented in many schools and will positively affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. This video in the Kazakh language features an unusual installation near Almaty: a field of 1000 balls is intended to draw attention to children's football and prove that bold ideas can be realized in Kazakhstan. 1000 balls on a snowy field = 1000 opportunities even in the most unexpected place! All balls will then be donated to our sports clubs and other children's sports centers. Supernovas website: https://lnkd.in/dh4ESaKk

Leadership development & professional coaching | Passionate about resilient people, organisations and societies | Showing up to steward our planet so that humankind can flourish here indefinitely
👋Hey 2024 - it’s halftime! From a professional perspective, the past six months boil down to 3 Cs (maybe inspired by Ylva M Andersson’s 3 Bs 😉) 1️⃣C#1 - #Community: I had the privilege of leading the work on Teach for Sweden’s alumni conference “Creating Hope”. I’m deeply grateful to Olena Pavliuk, Mahamed Yasin, Naeef Almezel and Sophie Lonyay for kicking us off with a much needed, heartfelt discussion about how we can create hope in times of crisis. It’s a question that guides my work with the alumni network - what might catalyse the enormous potential for #collectiveleadership that lies within us? 2️⃣C#2: #Coaching: I have completed the second part of my training to become a professional coach with Gothia Akademi. It has challenged and pushed me, and it enriches all other aspects of my professional and private life on a daily basis. Coaching is all about helping people access answers that they have within them, it’s based on a deep conviction in everybody’s ability and competence. Imagine shaping education systems as if we truly believed in every child’s potential? Imagine what would be possible then? 3️⃣C#3: #Charity: I volunteer as a trustee to Amala - and I get at least as much as I give - if not more. I’m so inspired by the work the team - and the students - do every day. During the last six months, Amala has become officially accredited by CIS and NEASC. That means truly transformative education developed by and for refugees has been recognised to be of equal (or possibly higher!) quality than other accredited high-school education. That is huge! 💫 6 months, 3 Cs and one thing left to say: ☀️Happy summer everyone! ☀️ I’m signing out now for some much anticipated annual leave and will be back in August. 👋 When I’m back, I look forward to sharing some news that also start with C… but that’s another post. Stay tuned. 📻

This is my account of how I relate to pain and lack. Turning suffering into strength, pain into power, difficulty into determination, adversity into advantage, struggle into success. After my first year at a national school, I joined the school rugby team since we played matches every week and the school was very serious about winning to keep its reputation as a powerhouse. I joined the squad to escape being sent home for unpaid school fees. I made my way up to the first team, and when my name was called up to be sent home, I was exempt since the school team was playing "enemies" for the prestigious Prescot Cup in the middle of the week, and the main league was growing hotter on the weekend! Despite having insane debt, I was still able to graduate from high school because I worked hard to uphold the institution's reputation. Because I was awarded a rugby scholarship and knowing my financial situation, I had no choice but to decline an offer to attend the Kenya's best university and choose one of the mid-status institutions instead! From Kenya's lowest rugby league to the highest, I captained the university team. The institution received free publicity and exposure on national television and channels every week until I graduated with a prestigious degree in optometry. Prior to that, they had to pay a lot of money to be included! I developed stronger character traits as well. During my rugby career, I had a potentially fatal lower back injury because I was smaller and less powerful than my teammates. As a result, I began strength training. After a year, I received a nomination to compete in the college's annual bodybuilding competition, and for three years, I won a perfect three-peat, winning even on my weakest days! Earning the Mr Flex title😀 To raise awareness about eye health, I will be travelling more than 13,000 kilometres on a motorbike from Nairobi to the southernmost tip of Africa in May. By sharing this message, you may join the cause. If you are able, you can also donate to the cause! I'm inviting riders and optometrists from all around Africa to join me! There are several easy ways we can change the narrative surrounding preventable blindness. https://lnkd.in/dhQaXwpZ #painasstrength #resilience #optometry #rugby #bodybuilding #success #growth

The Levelling Up Places (LUP) Service offers support to organisations including local authorities in delivering culture, heritage, and sport-led regeneration projects. I attended a peer learning event organised by the LUP Service yesterday in relation to the sustainable operational management of visitor attractions, heritage sites and museums. I don't routinely prioritise such events given other pressures and perceived benefits, but I am compelled to acknowledge just how worthwhile this particular event was. Whilst of relevance to our LUF2 programme in Earlestown and St Helens Town Deal projects, the main reasons for acknowledging this particular event are generally three-fold: 1. how well the event was organised by the LUP Service 2. the knowledge of the panel speakers and their willingness to share insights 3. the engagement of all participants But moreover the event was truly genuine in its purpose to provide meaningful support, not about tick-box engagement nor self-promotion. It sounds simple doesn't it but unfortunately its often not the case, and organisers of other events could learn so much from such basic expectations. Well done to the Levelling Up Places (LUP) Service. ⚽ I'd never fund football programmes, I just don't think the impact is that big. This was the opinion I held when Camden Giving started and if we were a traditional funder, that probably would of been part of our grant strategy. Instead we've given over £500,000 to sports (most football) projects in Camden because lots of our Participatory Grantmakers have shown me my incorrect assumptions. The people who run these football projects are building community, keeping young people safe and playing a part in reducing the 13year life expectancy gap between the wealthiest wards and most deprived wards in Camden. No, that's not a typo, 13 years is the impact that deprivation has here. Without a doubt, life is better for hundreds of young people in Camden because of the football that I wouldn't of funded. I couldn't be more happy about being wrong. But running these projects is hard and we wish we could do more to support teams to have free places to play and support the sharing of resources between teams. You can see the insights from our sports funding here https://ow.ly/E2ZZ50SoeBJ. If you are in a position to help us keep up this work, then get in touch and help me continue to be wrong about football funding. P.S. This pic is of the brilliant Camden United FC, run by Hafid Ali.

Have you always wanted to do the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon but couldn't get an entry? I have the opportunity for you to get an entry and help a great cause. The Healy Foundation (https://lnkd.in/eKZ92_Sg) seeks to step in and give under-resourced, high-performing college juniors and seniors the financial means to finish their education at a time when unexpected personal hardship jeopardizes their academic aspirations. Unanticipated adversity (e.g., death of a parent, parental unemployment, family illness) during one’s college education is an undeniable challenge for any student; however, the financial burden of such personal setbacks puts low-income students at increased risk of dropout and academic regression, obscuring their pathway to financial security. They still have race entries available for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on June 9, 2024. In exchange for a race entry, we ask our team members to fundraise or donate a minimum of $2,000. If fundraising, we provide a fundraising site, templates for emails, templates social media posts, etc. We try to make it as easy as possible for our team members. To find out more or to get one of the remaining slots please email James at [email protected]. DON'T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!!!
