We are proud to share that Children’s Hospital at LHSC and Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada (SHC Canada) have entered into a first of its kind affiliation to improve care, research and education. This groundbreaking agreement means that patients and families in southwestern Ontario will now have access to specialized paediatric ortheopaedic care closer to home. Fourteen-year-old Reiko Quinlan is one of these patients. Reiko was diagnosed shortly after birth with Osteogenesis imperfecta type III, a severe rare bone disease that has led to over 1,000 bone fractures so far in his lifetime. He was referred to SHC Canada in Montreal for the ultra-specialized care he needed, meaning he and his parents would need to make the eight-hour trip there upwards of eight times a year. Thanks to the affiliation agreement, some of Reiko’s care now takes place at Children’s Hospital, so his family now only makes a 90-minute trip from Goderich to London a few times a month. Global Treehouse Foundation is always encouraged to see researchers, practitioners, funders, and government, together with families and clinicians of seriously ill children, unite in a call to action for expanding children’s palliative care. 🗞️ Read this recent article from author Megane Kambala in the Luxembourg Times about the movement to provide children’s palliative care in Luxembourg! Link in comments. Three things stood out to us: 📢 All income countries can better meet the needs of children, families, and clinicians in paediatric palliative care. There is a tremendous worldwide need, with over 21 million children who face life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. ⚓ Cross-sector leadership anchors creating systems of care. Luxembourg’s example includes training for nurses and national advocacy —all needed to achieve change. 🌍 Sharing practices globally can accelerate outcomes. As the reporter notes, new providers face challenges, which is why we’re dedicated to ensuring practitioners have opportunities to share best practices.

For more than two decades, paediatric critical care providers have undertaken quality measurement to generate performance information and drive practice improvements. Monitoring healthcare quality is challenging in paediatric critical care due to measure variability, data collection burden, and uncertainty regarding consumer and clinician priorities. From our latest issue, make sure to read: 'Establishing a paediatric critical care core quality measure set using a multi-stakeholder, consensus-driven process' This study sought to establish a core quality measure set that (i) is meaningful to consumers and clinicians and (ii) promotes alignment of measure use and collection across paediatric critical care. Critical Care and Resuscitation is the official journal of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand. https://loom.ly/4D4rMJI

🚨 Publication alert 🚨 Understanding Paediatric Palliative Care Needs with the ACCAPED Scale Paediatric palliative care offers comprehensive support for children with serious conditions. The ACCAPED scale, developed in Italy, helps assess their clinical needs across nine domains, guiding appropriate care. A pilot study suggests this tool may predict when a child is nearing the end of life, making it crucial for tailored support. Further research is needed to confirm its prognostic role. #PaediatricPalliativeCare #Medicalwriting #Scicomm https://bit.ly/3KDwJYR

Delighted to share the publication of our rapid systematic review of the clinical and cost-related effectiveness out-of-hours palliative care telephone advice lines for adults. The article highlights: - That existing evidence for the effectiveness limited due to a lack of robust comparative studies, although small-scale observational studies suggest that these services can offer guidance and reassurance that support family carers in continuing care at home - That future development and evaluation of telephone advice lines must include patients and carers to better understand user needs that should shape services - That there is a need for more rigorous evaluations incorporating experimental methods with longer follow-up periods and standard reporting of service characteristics and outcomes To address the limited and variable evidence identified, we provide a framework of key components of telephone advice line to guide future research reporting. The survival rates of ill and injured children are far higher in emergency departments with the highest readiness levels—optimal coordination of care, top-trained personnel, explicit procedures, and advanced medical equipment—than in hospitals with low readiness levels. Today we publish our landmark report: 'The State of Pediatric Palliative Care in Canada.' The bottom line? Too many Canadian kids who need palliative care don’t get it, or only get it only within the last weeks or days of life.
