Great to see the new report from the Alexandra Rose Charity showing the power of Fruit & Veg on Prescription for people on low incomes living with food-related ill health. Working with GPs and social prescribers at the Bromley by Bow Centre in Tower Hamlets and community health practitioners at the AT Beacon Project in Lambeth, almost 200 people have been prescribed Rose Vouchers to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables in their local communities. The results speak for themselves: • 80% of participants now eating five-a-day. • 9 in 10 experiencing improved health and wellbeing. • 7 in 10 experiencing significant reductions in blood pressure as recorded by GPs and nurses. • 40% reduction in GP visits. • £222k invested in the local economy since the project began. We need to re-orientate the food system to make the healthy option the easy option. Innovations like Fruit & Veg on Prescription have an important role to play. After reading a report about a fruit and vegetable prescribing scheme piloted by Alexandra Rose Charity, I wanted to share the main impact points, as I find them quite amazing. With the scheme, each recipient had at least £8 per week in vouchers to spend at local markets on fruit and vegetables. Of course on paper an increase in fruit and vegetable consumption will always be beneficial, but there are other advantageous outcomes noted: 🥕Increased food security- vouchers allow for more money to be spent on staple foods. 🥑Improvements in physical and mental health, reducing pressure on NHS. 🫐More inspiration to cook with range of fruits and vegetables. 🥝Contact with community health hubs, where relationships are built with hub staff who can refer to other services. 🍓Spending vouchers within local markets increases interaction within community and supports local sellers. I would highly recommend taking a look at the report for more information: https://lnkd.in/eiZKk9nr

High levels of food insufficiency among New Yorkers have persisted since 2020. In 2023, one in ten (10.0%) New Yorkers reported food insufficiency, an increase over the prior year (9.7%). That translates to nearly 60,000 more New Yorkers estimated to have experienced food insufficiency in 2023 compared with 2022. About one in three low-income New Yorkers (31.7%) experienced food insufficiency in 2023. Between 2022 and 2023, rates of food insufficiency increased for all income groups except for the highest earners, households with annual income of $100,000 or more. As we continue to assess how Covid and post-pandemic support programs have impacted food security, stakeholders at multiple levels are connecting to address the gaps that are leading to increases in food insufficiency across the State. Join me on April 17th for a webinar in collaboration with the NY Health Foundation as we discuss their report "Still Hungry: Food Insufficiency in New York State 2020-2023" and the implications for policy, practice, and community-driven programs to address food stability. 89% of the organisations we support say they expect to see an increase in demand for food services this year. 58% of organisation expect a significant rise in demand. This shocking statistics was reported in The Standard and comes from a survey of over 600 of our community organisations which shows that your support is needed more than ever. In 2023, we achieved so much – delivering the equivalent of 32M meals to those in need which is only going to rise if our surveys hold true. Yesterday, Food Forward Inc., a DRK portfolio organization, was recognized by The White House as part of $1.7 billion in new commitments to advance the goal of ending hunger and reducing diet-related diseases by 2030 — all while reducing health disparities. From The White House: “Food Forward, a produce recovery and hunger relief nonprofit, will recover 290 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste, and distribute this surplus free of charge to people experiencing food insecurity. Food Forward team members and volunteers recover fruits and vegetables that would have otherwise been wasted from backyard fruit trees, public orchards, farmers markets, and other outlets. By increasing its current annual recovery volume from 80 million to 100 million pounds by 2026, Food Forward will provide 1.6 billion more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables to historically underserved communities. At the same time, this recovery will prevent emissions of more than 250,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eJMMjkx6 Rick Nahmias
