Thanks to Loft Orbital’s YAM-6 satellite node, the leading new defense company in Europe, Helsing, was able to successfully deploy real-time advanced AI capabilities in space. Helsing’s extended tests focus on real-time onboard radio frequency signal detection and their characterization enabling upcoming military grade Signal Intelligence and Cognitive Anti-Jamming applications. Space Force reshapes for a new era of competition. The U.S. Space Force is making organizational moves that the industry should closely monitor. These changes, spearheaded by Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman, aim to amplify the voices of satellite operators and personnel on the front lines of space operations and create new mechanisms to stay abreast of cutting-edge developments. Key initiatives include establishing Integrated Mission Deltas (IMDs) and creating a Space Futures Command. While these may sound like typical military jargon, they signal important shifts in the Space Force’s operations and innovation plans. The Space Force IMDs combine units that handle specific mission areas — such as space electromagnetic warfare and positioning, navigation and timing — with program offices responsible for testing, maintenance and acquisition activities. Officials said this integration breaks down traditional silos and allows for a more streamlined command structure where one leader oversees all aspects of mission readiness. Saltzman has advocated for this approach in order to accelerate modernization and posture the Space Force to compete more effectively with rival powers that are challenging the U.S. in the space domain. The US Space Force has clearly enunciated the need to focus on key areas to maintain dominance in what is a growing market for many countries: Space. Key to this is: - Operational responsiveness - Technological adaptability - Innovation - Grounding in practical (military) utility. Basically it’s all about delivering what people want, when and where they they want it, in innovative and practical ways. It’s Marketing 101 stuff, basically. The key for Australia’s success in space is successfully implementing country level and individual company level strategies for us to be a winner!

What does the future hold for space defence? A company contributing to the future of space defence is Millennium Space, a Boeing subsidiary, which is developing the Fire-control Support Fighter (FOO Fighter) system. Eight satellites will be built and equipped with advanced infrared and optical sensors for missile tracking. With launches planned for mid-2027, the system will leverage developments in satellite constellation systems and space-based data collection to provide far more accurate insights than ever before. Exciting developments on the horizon for Australia's defence capabilities! The recently launched iLAuNCH Trailblazer project, a collaboration of Northrop Grumman Australia and Spiral Blue aimed at developing a cutting-edge missile detection capability. This initiative aligns well with one of the SDIPs outlined in the 2024 DIDS and addresses the AUKUS Pillar II immediate priorities such as hypersonics and counter-hypersonics, enhancing our nation's defence capabilities. Executive Director Darin Lovett noted, "We are bringing together Australian know-how to build an advanced space surveillance system for missile defence on small satellites." The project will leverage advanced infrared detection technology and AI/ML techniques for effective threat identification. Rheinmetall is opening up new business areas in the space dimension. Initial conceptual approaches have been presented at the “International Aerospace Exhibition” - ILA 2024 - in Berlin. Rheinmetall is also exploring various areas of the NewSpace market. For the group, the focus in the space domain is primarily on the integration and utilization of space-based reconnaissance data in the tactical battlefield. To meet the individual needs of military customers, the group is working on customized solutions for tactical vehicles. By cooperation with selected partner companies, state-of-the-art technologies and services from the space sector will be made available to the defence sector. Embedded in Rheinmetall’s current strategy is an investment in ICEYE, international market leader in (synthetic aperture radar) SAR satellites.
