Trial week at Yugo Collins, PLLC ! We try cases. It’s what we do. Christopher Collins Mia Yugo Risk is par for the course when you’re a litigator. But this week was special because it was the first ever arbitration for our Summer Associates Hannah Todd and Tyler Ward! (This case was bifurcated so one part of it will be tried before a jury, and the other part before an arbitrator). You can’t be a good litigator if you’re afraid of trial. We love the courtroom. We love trying cases, and we like talking to judges and juries. Summer Associates need to see what practicing law is really like. That means they need to participate in trials. They need hands-on experience. Don’t sugarcoat the practice for your interns. Show them the real thing. We won’t have a verdict until next week. But our trial team, including Tyler & Hannah, have each made predictions, so we’ll see what happens. #triallawyers #lawyerlife #therealdeal

This was a very fun presentation - all the 3Ls had such good energy (especially for a Friday before Spring Break!!). Thanks for hosting us, Alice and Lewis & Clark Law School! One great question we got: "If I'm working and won't be available to start a new job before December, when should I start looking?" Don't waste time applying to open job postings you won't be able to start for months - very few, if any, employers will wait when they have a current need. If you're actively available (for example, you've passed your licensure, finished your externship, made the move, etc.) then you can be actively applying for posted jobs. However, don't discount the power of using the time when you are not quite ready to start to set yourself up for success! Network, schedule informational interviews, go to events, do research, get your materials and LinkedIn in order, follow recruiters, etc. so that when you're ready, your search will feel like it has good momentum (and a much more human connection) already.

His focus includes branded partnerships and licensing in the live entertainment space, as well as gaining experience in corporate, commercial, employment, privacy, internet, trade, and regulatory compliance matters for a global, multi-billion dollar international spirits manufacturer. New lawyers and summer associates should try to expose themselves to as many practice areas as they can. Finding a niche is important, but you need to know what area suits you first. And that comes from seeing as much as you can. Even new lawyers who have to hang out their own shingles can associate with more experienced counsel to see how it’s done in an unfamiliar area of law without stumbling through. And at a larger firm, you can always advocate to work with someone in an unfamiliar area who you can learn from. But at a certain point the real benefit can come from focusing — that’s when you really begin to add value for clients. And it’s best if the choice of specialty is born of exposure to a broad range of experiences rather than chance. #lawstudents
