🌿 EU Green Week 2024: Building a Water Resilient Europe 💧 This week, we had the privilege of attending EU Green Week in Brussels, where the pressing issue of water resilience took center stage. As Europe grapples with recurrent water-related crises, this edition of the annual conference focused on what is needed to make the EU more water resilient, both today and in the future. Key Discussions and Takeaways: 💡 Fostering a Water Smart Economy: A central theme was the development of a water smart economy within the EU. As Europe warms at twice the rate of other continents, it's imperative to act now. A water smart economy is pivotal for achieving water resilience and supporting the green transition. 🔄 Restoring and Safeguarding the Water Cycle: Panelists emphasized the challenges of restoring and safeguarding the disrupted water cycle. There was a unanimous call for integrated water management strategies to address these challenges effectively. 🚰 Ensuring Access to Clean and Affordable Water: Ensuring widespread access to clean and affordable water, along with adequate sanitation, was highlighted as a fundamental priority. Discussions included the necessity for international water cooperation to address global water demands, which are expected to outweigh supply by 2030. 📘 Advocating for a Blue Deal: Several speakers advocated for the next European Commission to prioritize water in policymaking through a proposed Blue Deal. This would involve creating a dedicated Directorate-General (DG) and Commissioner focused solely on water, moving beyond its current environmental silo. Such a shift would require the EU to go beyond its competencies, reflecting the socio-economic dimensions of water. 🔧 Legislative and Policy Revisions: At the EU level, there was consensus on increasing the availability of affordable and safe water. This includes a future revision of REACH and a reduction of PFAS to ensure water safety. 🔬 Promoting Research and Innovation: All panelists agreed on the critical need to support further research and innovation in the water sector. High water use industries must be aided in reducing their water consumption to enhance overall water resilience. 📢 A Call to Action: The clear message from EU Green Week participants is that Europe must become a global leader in water management. This involves not only internal actions but also global cooperation to tackle the impending water scarcity challenges. Our team at the Trade Mission of Israel to the EU remains committed to closely monitoring regulatory and policy developments in the EU. I was honoured to be invited to the Green Week 2024: Towards a Water Resilient Europe, organized by the EU Commission. I was asked to contribute to a panel moderated by Paul Speight (European Commission) and great experts like André Weidenhaupt (European Environment Agency Board), Andreia Liborio Franco (Portuguese Environment Agency), Ester Asin Martinez (WWF), Marco Beroš (European Investment Bank (EIB)). THE FIRST QUESTION How do you get organised to make sure that the EU rules on water protection and aquatic ecosystems are fully implemented? Could you give examples of good practices? You can listen to my answer in the video below, but in summary: 1. RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT PLANS as an instrument for spatial planning. 2. Continuous water parameter monitoring (it’s not so expensive) for better RIVER HEALTH. 3. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION (citizens, NGOs) for fostering a next generation more environmentally respectful than ours. 4. Fines are not useful if the water company is public because taxpayers pay. Managers should be liable for CRIMINAL OFFENSES; this is a method that could work. 5. UPDATE THE WATCHLIST of pollutants regularly (PFAS are not regulated YET in many Member States). Anticipating is better than reacting. Do you agree? Disagree? Additional ideas? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below! #WaterWiseEU 🔊 FIEC EU has become Ambassador of the 🆕 #EU campaign running under the slogan ‘See water differently’ We partner with EU Environment and Climate (ENV) and are among the Ambassadors of the "Water Wise EU" campaign promoted by the European Commission. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the increasing stress placed on Europe’s #water systems and to spotlight the many available solutions to tackle issues related to water. Download the KEY MESSAGES of the campaign: https://bit.ly/4bRFUks The campaign was formally launched at the #EUGreenWeek on water resilience, which took place on 29 and 30 May, and will last until the end of September. It was officially opened by the EU Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič . "(...) Circularity must be at the heart of integrated water management. We need a ‘water efficiency first' principle to reduce demand – and water that is not used, cannot be wasted. Reusing #waste water, giving it a second life in agriculture, cities, energy production, or industrial processes, can help reduce the pressure on water supplies (...). With this ‘WaterWiseEU' campaign, we want to build a new consensus on longer-term measures and define an inclusive and comprehensive trajectory for the EU to achieve water resilience by 2050. We will need everybody on board in this work, and an innovative approach, if we are to achieve this. So I invite you not only to take part in the discussion, but also to spread the word wherever you go." - said EVP Šefčovič in his keynote address (read full statement: https://bit.ly/3yNbjFX). FIEC EU is a strong supporter of the idea of a #EuropeanBlueDeal, as it believes that more water resilience is urgently needed in the EU. At the EU Green Week, the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency of the Council of European Union stressed that the water cycle is broken and that more investment in water resilience is needed in the next EU budget. The incoming Hungarian Presidency stressed that water is not only a natural resource, but also a social and economic resource, and that investing in water means investing in industrial #competitiveness. FIEC fully shares these views. We join the European Commission's invitation to have an active role in the dissemination of this new communication campaign: the material and the visuals are available in all EU official languages. You can use the online toolkit for 'partners' to get involved and share the key messages among your networks: https://bit.ly/3Kw8yeK 📽 A 10-second campaign teaser #video invites people to dive into the topic.
