From the article: Copenhagen fashion week has just announced that it will ban exotic skins and feathers from its catwalks next year, becoming the biggest industry event yet to do so. While the prohibition follows similar moves from smaller fashion weeks, such as Stockholm and Melbourne, it will be a while until exotic skins, including crocodile, snake, alligator and ostrich, as well as ostrich and peacock feathers, are considered cruel in the same way as fur. ___ While this is still a fledgling change in the sector (and can easily be reversed) all fashion weeks must be pushed to provide their policies about the use of wild species in the collections they profile. Target 5 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework states that by 2030, "Ensure that the use, harvesting and trade of wild species is sustainable, safe and legal, preventing overexploitation, minimizing impacts on non-target species and ecosystems, and reducing the risk of pathogen spill-over". After seafood, fashion and furniture are the biggest users and profiteers from the use of wild species in their (currently opaque) supply chains. Does XX Fashion Week have a statement and/or policy about the sustainable use of endangered and exotic species in the collections you profile? • If Yes, can you provide this statement and/or policy? • If No, given the landmark 2019 intergovernmental report into the global extinction crisis confirmed that direct exploitation for legal trade is the most important driver of decline and extinction risk for marine species and the second most important driver for terrestrial and freshwater species, would XX Fashion Week consider putting in place such a statement or policy by 2025? 2. Can you confirm if XX Fashion Week requires all the designers/brands you profile to provide you with their policy on how they manage their supply chain when it comes to using endangered and exotic species for their collections? 3. If XX Fashion Week does not yet require the designers/brands you profile to provide you with such a policy, would XX Fashion Week consider requesting such a policy from the designers/brand you profile by 2025? 4. How would XX Fashion Week describe the progress on the management and monitoring of the sustainable use of endangered and exotic species used in the global, luxury fashion industry and how do you back up the statement made? I bought these Blundstone Australia boots in 2008. I've worn them every single winter ever since. I've used them in the harshest situations including as my go-to shoe for rain and snow, while horseback riding 🏇🏼, gardening and weeding volunteering work, and in my wood carpentry projects during university. 👷🏻♀️ Would you tell they've been through so much? After about 10 years, the original rubber sole crumbled to pieces, so I've had them re-soled. The new sole changed the shoe's aesthetic but, after my initial disappointment, it eventually proved more functional for my needs than the original one. Meanwhile, as I also worked on setting up repair business models, I learned that the main barrier to repairs is the availability of spare parts. This is true for sneakers, apparel, accessories... You name it. As I went through these experiences, I reflected on the way we approach repairs and how it needs to change on all levels. 👯 Customers expect repaired items to look brand new, but that's often not possible nor necessary. 🪡 Repair providers are often pressured between a profession that has been going out of demand, customers' high expectations and emotional attachment to their items, and brands' lack of systemic perspectives and collaboration in providing said original parts. 🥾 Brands currently piloting repair services, see them more as a sustainability or marketing activity rather than as an informative data collection opportunity to inform circular product development, to simplify the trims and components portfolio, or to warehouse and sell spare parts. The rights-to-repair Act, as part of the European Green Deal, is already strongly influencing this, but as always without a systemic perspective there's a strong risks to either dilute the impact or create negative repercussions elsewhere. I'm working on a long-form feature about #sustainability in the #hunting apparel industry. Folks in this space, please engage! As the industry rockets toward a $2-billion valuation by 2030 (according to a market research study I found which I'm happy to share directly with anyone interested in it), where does the concept of sustainability land on the order of priorities? The word is absent from every major hunting apparel brand's website, but I refuse to interpret that as the concept not being part of their larger blueprints. So I ask the following questions: -What sustainability work are hunting apparel brands already doing? -Is there room for a more circular gear economy, secondhand resale platforms, materials recycling initiatives, overstock donations, etc. in the hunting space? -Does the concept of product sustainability turn off a more traditionally conservative consumer base? Has sustainability become a four-letter word for lots of hunters? (The naïveté in me likes to think this issue is apolitical in nature, but this feels worth asking.) -The hunting apparel industry is making truly amazing stuff. Simultaneously, new gear is out of budget for a lot of hunters. Hand-me-downs and used gear are still the name of the game for that population. That's a reuse economy. That's sustainability in action. So, if there is an issue with politicizing sustainability, is there room to depoliticize it or reframe the concept, since some portion of the hunting public already engages with it every season? -How do brands stand to benefit from emphasizing sustainability? What are some success stories from other industries? Food for thought. People think they want the latest fashion trends. What they really need is sustainability. Here's the problem: - When you buy fast fashion, it's a strain on the planet. Tons of textile waste end up in landfills. - When you support fast fashion brands, you contribute to unsustainable practices that harm our environment. - Fast fashion's appeal is fleeting, leaving our earth burdened for centuries to come. I’m not one to post much in these parts, as so much of my time is spent helping others communicate their good works and, if I’m honest, that’s how I’ve liked it. But change is good. So I will be throwing my hat in the LinkedIn ring pretty regularly in future, and what better time to start than the launch of Ecofest 2024 and the middle of Auckland Council’s Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan consulation period. One’s a fun opportunity for folk in the community to try their hand at living more sustainably; the other is an exercise in legislative and administrative rigour, intended to bring about better outcomes for the envirionment. This post addresses a particularly pressing community and environmental issue: the health of your trousers. These two-legged garments work hard to support our self-esteem and protect our modesty, from the board room to the gym, from the mechanics’ workshop to the fundraising luncheon. But they’re not infallible, as many who have casually lent over or sat down to the shocking sound of a fabric tear coming from one’s derriere will know. Even after such incidents, your pants can be saved, with style. But too often we give up on them. Enter Florence; Keeping Clothes Alive Longer, my own new community-enviro venture. It is both a zero-waste dressmaking service and workshop provider that takes unsold garments from (currently) Beautification Trust and unwanted zips and buttons from Impactex. We alter, mend, remodel and redesign, then take the left over scraps and textiles back to Impactex to make insulation and signage. How many times have you said goodbye to a decent pair of pants because everything else is in working order apart from the dangerously worn patches on the inner thigh...or the knee....or both? What about a straining button or a scraping hem? With a little creativity and willingness to do things differently you can keep those favourite trousers, some money in your pocket, and protect the planet.
