Wow, this article over at The Hollywood Reporter really is feeding the AI monster, but it's not all bad... "The Pandora’s box of AI has likely already been unleashed within the entertainment industry" and “There are tons of people who are using AI, but they can’t admit it publicly because you still need artists for a lot of work and they’re going to turn against you,” “Dubbing and subtitling employment in Europe is finished,” although Pip Studios Ltd. have just announced its localisation business will offer both human and AI-powered transcription. "Indie producer/distributor XYZ FILMS will present a sizzle reel of AI-translated trailers of international films at Festival de Cannes " "Over the next three years, it is estimated that nearly 204,000 positions will be adversely affected. Concept artists, sound engineers, and voice actors stand at the forefront of that displacement. Visual effects and other postproduction work were also cited as particularly vulnerable." Leading Hollywood talent agency CAA has reportedly been testing an initiative called CAA Vault, allowing A-list clients to create AI clones of themselves to open new creative opportunities. CAA partnered with AI firms to scan clients’ bodies, faces, and voices, creating AI replicas for uses like reshooting, dubbing, and stunt double superimposing. CAA's goal is to eventually make the tech available industry-wide, not just to its clients. Hollywood has already been bracing for AI’s impact, with Tyler Perry even halting studio expansions after seeing OpenAI’s Sora video capabilities. While the industry grapples with AI’s coming implications, CAA is taking proactive measures to help clients benefit from the shift. At the dawn of the AI era, the almost unanimous opinion was that jobs involving creativity would be among the safest in the upcoming "rise of the machines". Today, it looks like it is the other way around. Sony Pictures is embracing generative artificial intelligence to cut costs. Chief executive Tony Vinciquerra, at an investor conference in Japan, said on Thursday that the company is “very focused on AI” and mobilizing to adopt the technology into the moviemaking process to streamline production. “We’ll be looking at ways to use AI to produce films for theaters and television in more efficient ways, using AI primarily,” Vinciquerra said. A study surveying 300 leaders across the entertainment sector issued in January found that AI is killing jobs in Hollywood, with little relief on the horizon. The report said that three-fourths of respondents indicated that AI tools supported the elimination, reduction or consolidation of jobs at their companies. This. All this. I keep bringing this up - AI is ultimately going to replace a LOT of work. The unfortunate aspect of it and what needs to be seriously discussed is: - what roles will be first? - how quickly? This mentions kicking off entry roles first, however… how does that help anything unless you don’t care that at some point the mid-senior roles will ultimately retire or die off and you will not have anyone to take over those particular roles to continue the work? Obviously this implies mid-senior will also be eliminated. We all see the landscape changing with the strikes and layoffs, but to what extent? A majority of us are still rather early in our careers - only 10-15yrs into it - while our elders are entering the age to retire with their pensions. Us middle-agers who spent time and energy on degrees and learning our various fields are now seeing a crunch in jobs and were never given retirement options or work freelance, and the plan was meant to be paid to save and plan… which does not bode well given it’s all based on a gambling stock market (401k, etc). My biggest concern is the timeline and expectation of how we will manage a multi-industry age of unemployment in a very short amount of time (let’s say 10-20yrs). Are we expected to learn a new field in our 30s/40s/50s? And how do we know what fields are safe from AI takeovers? What fields are most reliable for employee-retirement offers? We’re facing working and re-learning an economy for the rest of our working-lives. Is anyone paying attention to this and does anyone care? I’m all for AI taking over it if means we can work less and not worry about paying bills or replacing tax dollars ourselves… that’s the other thing - does anyone understand AI will not be paying to holdup our federal and state governments? 🤷🏻♀️ #AItakeover #economicoutlook #ai #filmandtv #careerchange #careerdevelopment #economicforecast #filmindustry
