This is about giving credit where credit is due by transforming lived experiences into valuable academic credentials with real currency in the labor market. The positive impact on students from underrepresented backgrounds is encouraging." - Dr. Constance St. Germain, president of Capella University. Research conducted by the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) suggests that CPL (Credit for Prior Learning) can improve the chances of completing college degrees while reducing costs and saving time. According to a brief by WICHE, almost 80% of institutions in the United States offer some form of CPL.  https://lnkd.in/e-WgaF3b CAEL's research enabled the establishment of standards, which led to the development of automated CPL workflows in AcademyOne's AssessED. This portal and prior learning assessment and recognition software framework allows for the evaluation of experiential learning and knowledge gained outside of the classroom, supporting state and systemwide credit for prior learning initiatives.    Here are some great examples of how research, smart software, and partnering came together. In the following piece, Dr. Eric Dieter, executive director of the Longhorn Center for Academic Equity at the University of Texas at Austin, shares his approach to enhancing student access and equity. When asked how UT is infusing career readiness into the student experience, Dieter answers, "There are a variety of programs that check those different boxes. I direct our College-to-Career initiatives, with programs that help students think about, once they transition out of college, what's going to come next for them, and how do they learn about it. And asking those questions early enough to make informed decisions about whether or not it's a good decision for them. Then, once they've settled on a decision, do they have good, effective, efficient, concrete plans in place to get them where they need to go?" He adds, "Ultimately, what a lot of our programming does is focus on anything we can do to imagine fit, so when we talk to students about going into law school or medical school or a Ph.D. program, we're really good about using this language of 'good fit.'" Dieter also discusses the success of investing in Kaplan's All Access License, which has provided many students from diverse backgrounds with free test prep for graduate-level admissions exams like the GRE, LSAT, and MCAT. "Part of what we want to do with Kaplan’s All Access License is reduce cost, reduce barriers...It’s about helping them understand the value of the test prep in that process and understanding the value of the exams in this process, and to treat them seriously and to be as prepared as possible so you maximize your competitiveness," he says.
