Great work by the Curtin University team of Roman Pevzner and Boris Gurevich who collaborated with CO2CRC Limited's Hadi Nourollah to have their paper published in the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. The paper titled, 'Feasibility of targeted active seismic monitoring of geological carbon storage using refracted waves', puts forward a methodology that can verify leakage (or lack of it) with minimal seismic activity. The proposed method is an economic alternative to full time-lapse seismic mapping of the #CO2 plume to demonstrate “conformance”. It has potential application for hard-to-access #CCS sites such as near shore areas. CO2CRC, in collaboration with research partners, intend to verify the feasibility study in the field, in the upcoming shallow fault project. IF YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION IS TO KNOW ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT CCUS IN ALBERTA AND BEYOND... ...I SALUTE YOU! It's a topic for our times...and it's one layered in technological and socio-political complexity. But, and this is a big "but", we've been here before in terms of the banner-waving headlines and pontifications of future success. Just think of all the maps you saw years ago of Alberta and its myriad proposals for upgraders in the heady days of oilsands production. Proposals aplenty. Just like the maps of west coast British Columbia and the untold LNG projects that were going to make Canada a true global #naturalgas actor. Currently, there are #CCUS projects aplenty on the books. In 10 years from now, how many actually be sequestering #carbondioxide is anyone's guess. Most will likely just die, as they say in parliamentary terms, on the order paper. But if there's one thing that distinguishes the current discourse cycle from those previous "heady" times, it's the volume of great work being done from a diverse spectrum of actors, each examining decarbonization aspirations from different perspectives. That's critical because that diversity is the foundation for better and more constructive dialogue about how #CCUS should fit into the grander scheme of things. With that in mind, I offer you two great additions to your growing compilation of backgrounders and explainers. - The Energy Futures Lab is a critical cog in the way our sectoral gears mesh and synchronize with each other. It brings together and catalyzes critical and often competing perspectives for true #thoughtleadership results. Its latest effort, just released and downloadable below, examines #CCUS from a #systems orientation and framed around this problem statement: "The lack of a shared understanding of these challenges results in fragmented interventions and hampers the growth of the CCUS ecosystem." - If you don't keep an eye on Alberta Law Review, shame on you :). It's a terrific resource and contributors are some of the best legal minds in our energy sector. In its most recent offering, a team of sharp lawyers produced a very handy meta-primer on the state of the Great Pore Space Race (my words, not theirs) that if you hadn't heard of carbon capture before, a quick read brings you right up to speed with remarkable thoroughness. Last month, I completed the Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Executive Education Program at the University of Houston. Here are my key takeaways: 1- The CCUS industry is nascent yet complex, encompassing various industries and CO2 emission sources. While it presents challenges, CCUS is an essential component of any climate mitigation strategy that does not rely upon energy deprivation. We should shift our focus from energy deprivation as the ultimate solution to climate change. 2- Hate carbon emissions, not fossil fuels. Regulatory agendas often target fossil fuels, but the real issue is carbon emissions. CCUS offers a solution, enabling zero-emission use of fossil fuels. Many regions don’t have the luxury of deploying renewable energy or new technology. As Mike Nasi wisely noted in the course, we need a 'developing world mentality with developed world resources.' 3- Where is the ‘T’ (i.e., transportation) in the acronym CCUS? You would think that it is the easiest part of this puzzle. But while capture, utilization and storage require the largest investments, transportation is the greatest barrier for an effective CCUS commercialization. 4- To enhance the deployability of CCUS, it is important to first establish a robust infrastructure in high-pressure and high-purity carbon stream categories, which are the most cost-effective for CO2 capture. This approach will pave the way for scaling up other more challenging categories, such as the dilute category, which compromises roughly 2/3 of carbon emissions.

The SHSU Institute for Homeland Security hosts technical paper series on our website, ihsonline.org. The non-partisan series features papers with various viewpoints and examines critical and timely issues facing homeland security. In today’s “Research Spotlight,” we feature Benjamin Dierker's paper, “A Unique Win-Win: Bolstering Texas' Energy Security by Leveraging Existing Infrastructure to Effectively Decarbonize." The 2021 Texas Winter Storm Uri was a watershed moment for many Texans regarding energy security. The statewide incident exacerbated an increasing tension between climate-centric sustainability goals and power demands anchored to energy security. While environmental activists saw decarbonization as even more critical, traditional energy advocates saw the need for hydrocarbons and pointed out liabilities created by unpredictable wind and solar. Despite these views, through innovative collaboration, it may be possible to generate a scenario that benefits the Texas economy and delivers on the goals for all advocates. By making prudent use of existing infrastructure and embracing hydrocarbons, Texas can play a significant role in driving an economic resurgence that achieves greater decarbonization than a general shift toward renewables. This report serves as a qualitative review of quantitative data found elsewhere to present a novel framework to achieve multiple industrial and policy goals simultaneously.
