As I look back on my time as Chair of Filmmaking, I’ve thoroughly believed in connecting our program and students to the media industry, especially as we’re here in Los Angeles. I’ve spent so much time reaching out to friends and colleagues to do just that because I think that's important to do. I’ve found them so supportive. The result? Two wonderful partners for our program and thus our school in Warner Bros Discovery and Sony. Donations to our program from Warner Bros Discovery, Sony, Disney, DreamWorks, and Final Draft. Visits for our students to Paramount (12 times), Warner-Discovery, IMAX (3 times), NBCUniversal (twice), Disney, CBS, and YouTube. How does that connect to student careers and learning? I believe that when you really connect with the industry, you understand it more, and that makes you simply a better candidate for it. I don’t even think you should work for major media companies, but please know you could. I really didn’t think so when I first started, and I didn’t really try. I wish I had that belief, though it all turned out well for me. My posts here are a small attempt to explain how you can do so. Please keep in mind that we’re a small and new program, and below is where our students have interned in recent years. Is this all connected? I’ve seen student internships turn directly into jobs so many times and graduates work at places I first brought them to as students. Dear Network, As a fourth-year student I am looking for a company to work with on my graduation assignment. This assignment involves addressing a client’s challenge using Design-Based Research (DBR). Another way to describe it is that I will do internal and external research to find out the structure, target audience, and marketing strategies to tackle the challenge and find a solution. This will be finalized into a prototype. I would love to be able to do this assignment for a company that is connected to the gaming/esports industry or a company that works in the film industry. Some key points about this assignment:- It is not an internship (I still have classes during this time, which means I will not be present at the company. It is also an unpaid position). - Time frame, I will be doing this assignment for about 20 weeks (The start date would be in April). - A supervisor is needed for any questions and the two handovers/presentations. Our next HB Intern Spotlight will focus on Gabe Kamins. A Film Analyst/Player Evaluation Intern from The University of Wisconsin-Madison. Gabe aims to combine his passions for marketing, branding, and sports to make a positive impact in the business world. We asked Gabe to share some insight on his time with Hoop Brothers. What are some of the tasks and projects you're responsible for as apart of that role? "Analyzing film on middle school and high school basketball players, creating player evaluation reports, collaborating with fellow interns on various projects, and conducting research on individual players and teams with the goal of identifying viable partnerships." Explain what you have enjoyed most about the internship with Hoop Brothers. "I have greatly enjoyed the family element of Hoop Brothers. Everybody cares about each other and shares the same goal of turning Hoop Brothers into a powerhouse sports media company!" What is one piece of advice you would give a new intern joining Hoop Brothers team ? "Don't be afraid to ask for help, whether that be asking a fellow intern or a manager. Everyone is very accessible and wants to help you succeed!"

Our new BASIC internship started this month. Six former unemployed young people who came into our program learning so much in the next 12 months. We teach our interns many different skills and life lessons. Today we talked in artistry skills training about the design rule of the golden ratio. We looked at our bodies and into nature to find it.
