📌 New Poll Results Highlight Urgent Need for Compassionate Solutions to Ontario’s Opioid Crisis    In the midst of the ongoing opioid and drug poisoning crisis, a significant majority of Ontarians believe it requires a health care and social services response rather than punitive measures. According to recent poll results by Pollara Strategic Insights for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ontario Division: 🚨 73 per cent of Ontarians worry the crisis is worsening.  🏘️ 56 per cent report that opioid addiction is a concern in their community.  ❤️ 64 per cent express empathy for those affected by opioid addiction.  🏛️ 71 per cent believe the government should prioritize addressing this crisis.    The crisis has led to nearly 3,000 preventable opioid-related deaths in Ontario last year alone. This data challenges the misconception that the crisis only affects individuals who are homeless, revealing that nearly 60 per cent of those who died from opioid toxicity were employed. Relapse and addiction. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing put out a brief on demystifying relapse. Here is a quote from that brief: “Relapse” is the medical term for the deterioration in health or the recurrence of symptoms after a period of disease remission. For people recovering from a substance use disorder (SUD), sometimes referred to as alcohol or other drug addiction, relapse is common. "It is a multifaceted issue, intricately linked to many physiological, psychological, and societal factors. Although similar in complexity to many other chronic conditions, such as diabetes or asthma, which have recurring periods of symptoms, SUD relapse is conceptualized very differently and is distinctly more stigmatized." The stigma associated with this disease and the shame that often accompanies a relapse or return to use keeps people sick longer, prevents them from asking for help, and they are fearful of telling family or other support systems, including medical professionals. Relapse has become more fatal as the lethality of substances increases. A D D I C T I O N 🧠🧠 Addiction is a chronic brain relapsing disease characterised by continuing use despite its harmful effects. Chronic meaning it has no cure but can be managed Brain suggest where the disease takes roots. Relapse(ing) meaning the person can return to this state after a period of being well. And how do we know one is suffering from this disease? Regardless of the harm his/her use is bringing to him: health, financially, socail capital, family, he/she still uses/drinks/smokes/injects/inhales or what ever means the individual gets his/her substance of choice into the system, they will still use. 6 out of 10 individuals suffering from the disease of addiction are genetically pre-disposed. This means that, just like other chronic diseases that can be passed from one or both parents to their offspring, so is the disease of addiction. People who suffer from this condition need all the love and care they can get from family, friends, employer and colleagues at work.
