Book review of The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp, M.D.: This book gets down to the fundamentals of caring for babies. The main premise is that newborns feel most comfortable in a womb-like environment and this book details how to create this environment safely and effectively. Much of the information presented tracked with similar information from my Foundational and Advanced Newborn Care coursework from Newborn Care Solutions. I gained some, though not a ton, of new knowledge from this book (mainly because I had learned a lot of the information from other sources). I would absolutely recommend "The Happiest Baby on the Block" to parents who want the basics on how help their baby with sleep and comfort. They touch on this a bit in the book, but I would also like to drive the point home that making your baby happy is truly the number 1 priority for newborns; their comfort and security is what allows their brains and bodies to develop optimally.

NICU Awareness Month might be coming to an end, but for some parents, the journey is just beginning. The constant turmoil. The helplessness. The anxiety. The wait. If you know an NICU parent whose journey is still on, here are a few ways you can help: ➡️ Ask how THEY are doing, not just how the baby is doing. The latter might trigger negative emotions if there’s no good news to share, but the former puts them a bit more at ease. ➡️ Ask "what they need right now" or "what you can help with." These show sincere willingness to help rather than a passive "let me know if you need anything." ➡️ If they are too overwhelmed to answer point 2, offer to start a meal chain with friends, help them with their grocery shopping or routine tasks, or babysit older siblings so they can spend more time in the NICU. ➡️ Avoid unsolicited "parenting tips." Every NICU journey is unique. As a friend or family member, focus on caring for the parents and their well-being. And let the doctors and parents focus on caring for the child. #NICUAwarenessMonth #NICUAwareness

ICON week 2024 Huge thanks to all the maternity, neonatal and health visiting staff for promoting the message to parents and carers Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust Top tips for staff when discussing ICON with families and carers. Remind parents that: 👶🏾All babies are different, all babies cry and you can get through it. 👶Crying often increases around 2 weeks and peaks at 6 weeks, but remember this phase will pass. 👶🏻There are many ways to soothe a baby-refer to the leaflet on the ICON website. 👶🏿If you are finding it hard to cope, it's okay to step away for a few minutes, as long as the baby is safe, until you are feeling calm. 👶🏾Create a comfort kit with your babies favourite items-soft toys, blankets, or calming books. 👶🏼Take a break and ask for help #ICONcope #ICON2024
