A wonderful summary on the research on child poverty - consequences and potential policy solutions. A favorite excerpt -- Historically, rates of child poverty in the United States have been considerably higher in other developed countries, suggesting that child poverty is not an insurmountable problem. Just as many sources of child poverty have their roots in social structures, our social policies and investments offer powerful solutions. Recognizing the importance of addressing systemic inequities in education, health care, employment opportunities, and other avenues toward economic well-being, effective solutions must encompass a range of strategies. https://lnkd.in/eEB7PN-F

Independent Program Evaluator | Partnering with nonprofit leaders to maximize their program's impact and bring human flourishing to the communities where they serve.
We shouldn’t strive to end poverty, but instead our goal should be to facilitate human flourishing. “The true goal of public policy shouldn’t be nudging people over the poverty line but enabling people to lead good lives,” says Elliot Haspel. “A full-fledged movement toward child and family flourishing is called for. Proposed laws could be evaluated by their impact on flourishing. Communities could create plans and benchmark their progress. They could ask themselves, in essence, what do our residents need in order to not merely survive but thrive?” #humanflourishing #poverty #thrive #publicpolicy https://lnkd.in/gHQZ3mQi

Looking for something to add to your reading list? Check out this review of “Poverty, by America” by Matthew Desmond from Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project. “Desmond summarizes America’s poverty crisis in this way: First, we exploit the poor. We constrain their choice and power in the labor, housing and financial markets. Those of us who are not poor benefit from this. “Second, we prioritize the subsidization of affluence over the alleviation of poverty.” https://lnkd.in/giFQEh_H
