I grew up in generational migrant labor poverty and firmly believed that the people who were "making it" did not care about the people who weren't. At 28, I was working on my bachelor's degree and started meeting people who had grown up with roofs over their heads, food in their fridges, health and transportation needs met and had gone to the "good schools." I quickly learned that they did care. My next thought was if they cared about the people impacted by poverty, why would they allow people to suffer in their own communities? I began having conversations with people and realized, most did not have a clue. They could no more describe my life in the context of generational poverty than I could talk about middle class norms and experiences. I began studying where do middle class people learn about poverty? I found three sources: 1. Media; 2. A life experience of poverty; and 3. Working with children or adults in the crisis of poverty. I started looking for curriculum in K-12 and higher ed that educated people about the history of poverty in the United States, about the many different types of poverty which present varying obstacles to accessing resources and opportunities to thrive, and differences in communication and relationships by social class. I learned we graduate people in every sector (including social work) without a grounded understanding of poverty and its impacts on our fellow human beings. I have devoted my life to making sure we are fighting the poverty, not the children and adults impacted by it. I have worked all 50 states and with all sectors of the community. When people gain poverty competencies it changes the ways we serve, support and interact with people living in the war zone of poverty. What does poverty really look like in our community? This is an important question because the answer is challenging and a lot less obvious than seems like it should be - similar to the experience of poverty. This video does a good job of summarizing what poverty can look like (and the difficulty in defining it) and is worth the 5 minute watch. A few key takeaways: - Poverty isn't always visible. It can look different for different people and is often hidden, either because of a feeling of shame and stigma associated with it or because someone appears to be making ends meet even if they aren’t (the working poor, for example). - While numerous services exist, navigating them to find the right combination of services can be overwhelming, as can be the application process for each individual service. - Without basic necessities like food and shelter, making positive life changes becomes nearly impossible, as a person’s bandwidth is focused on fulfilling those needs. What struck me was how interconnected these individual challenges are with our broader community and economic development efforts. When people are forced to defer basic needs, it impacts everything from workforce participation to overall community well-being. Poverty isn't just an individual issue - it's a community one. No single agency or service provider can address poverty alone. A collaborative effort across sectors is required to create a more holistic approach that addresses the complex barriers that perpetuate poverty. The Burnaby Poverty Reduction Strategy Committee aims to foster this kind of approach - and I’m hopeful that we will make strides in that direction - but the dialogue on how we can together begin to reduce poverty needs further reach and much greater engagement. While this is a very complex problem, I believe that solutions will be fairly simple if they are delivered as part of a streamlined and tailored pathway. As we head further in to 2024, we are keen to share some work we have been undertaking at the Children's Policy Centre. 1. More for Children What is the More for Children project?  At the Children’s Policy Centre, we believe it is not possible to ensure well-being for all children in Australia while child poverty continues – and it is not possible to end child poverty unless we can understand, measure and respond poverty in a child-centered way. More for Children is a program of transformative research which will build our understanding of children’s experiences of poverty in Australia, refine the MOR Framework for assessing and measuring poverty, and support policy makers to design child-centered policies to reduce poverty. At the heart of More for Children is rights-based research with children – and their families and communities – to bring their voices to the fore. More for Children is a transformative, long-term, research project with the aim of reducing child poverty and scaffolding well-being for all children in Australia.     The first phase of More for Children is being undertaken in partnership with the Paul Ramsay Foundation and focuses on rights-based research with children to understand their experiences of poverty.    The research will develop a suite of indicators designed to identify the underlying causes of poverty and to inform responses at local, state/territory, and national levels. The More for Children research team is working with two existing place-based initiatives in regional communities in Victoria and Tasmania.     Our approach is informed by participatory methods in the form of child centered research workshops allowing the researchers to gain an understanding of what makes life good for children and what makes life tough for children. A new report by the NECPC, released today, calls for regional leaders to take a ‘public health approach’ to tackling child poverty. This National Poverty Awareness Month, let's turn our attention to a critical issue that demands collective understanding and action: child poverty in America. 👶 **The Numbers Tell a Story:** In 2022, the landscape of child poverty in the United States revealed both progress and persistent challenges. More than half of the Southern states witnessed child poverty rates of 18.0% or higher, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in this region. 📈 **Regional Variations:** While the Northeast and West boasted lower child poverty rates, states like New Hampshire and Utah led the way with rates below 15.0%. Conversely, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Louisiana faced more significant hurdles, with rates surpassing 24%. 🔄 **Yearly Dynamics:** The annual report brought forth a mix of positive and concerning trends. Over a third of states experienced a decline in child poverty rates, signaling potential improvements. However, West Virginia stood out as the sole state grappling with an increased rate. 🏙️ **Metropolitan Realities:** Zooming into metropolitan areas, disparities were stark. Child poverty rates ranged from 3.7% to a concerning 40.9%, with Southern metro areas facing particular challenges. 🌐 **The Call to Action:** National Poverty Awareness Month beckons us to turn empathy into action. Let's amplify our efforts to support initiatives that address the root causes of child poverty, ensuring that no child is left behind. Together, we can build a more equitable and compassionate future for all our young ones. 🤝 **Get Involved:** - Support local organizations combating child poverty. - Advocate for policies addressing systemic issues. - Raise awareness by sharing information and fostering dialogue.
