At CarbonBright , we did a study for a major retailer that has introduced refillable bottles for some of its home care products. As the article states, we found that there is a higher footprint for refillable bottle manufacturing. So you get benefit only when it is actually re-used a certain number of times. Such changes needs to go hand in hand with all more changes to introduce a behavior change in the user to actually bring back the containers for re-use (several things like $ savings, ease of doing this etc). You need to have ongoing tracking of customer behavior and keep taking necessary steps to influence the behavior.

The focus of Sustainability in Packaging... The focus is almost entirely on the 'end-of-life' phase for business owners instead of the full picture when it comes to decision-making for their packaging makeup. Glass - You'd think pretty eco-friendly choice right, well 99% of people will because that's the perception out there. When in reality glass has a 3x higher carbon footprint than plastic. Well, shit 🤔 Very few are looking at the entire life cycle, a high volume of glass is not recycled due to contamination and the sheer amount of material that goes into producing it and the emissions from shipping its heavy arse are just glossed over as well. All these little things matter and should be considered, not just the bits that suit a brand's narrative to fool consumers into thinking they're an eco-conscious brand. I'm not saying plastic is a better choice than glass or vice versa but the perceptions around different materials needs to be given a wee shake.
