Are your managers Rotation Ready? I recently went on my own version of a roadshow, where I ran a series of workshops for Mangers of the Apprentices and Graduates at Bakkavor across the North, South and East. There isn’t a magic solution to helping young people transition from education into the world of work but instead (I believe), many different contributing factors that can either set these young people up to flourish, or flounder. Rotation Managers are instrumental in this process. Bakkavor take a holistic approach to supporting their young talent and they have a brilliant early careers team. I am so grateful to not only be able to support their young talent during their induction process, through my i am me wellbeing workshop, helping each young person to understand more about how they can become proactive in looking after their own mental health and wellbeing, but also through my one-to-one coaching. The support I have now provided for the rotation managers through Linac Learning has helped them to shape and clearly define the standards that they will now hold each other accountable for, when young talent join the business, creating an excellent experience for all. Adding value is key and receiving feedback such as the below is what keeps me wanting to do more to support young people. “Feedback from the group session was really positive, I also wanted to say thank you for the coaching support you gave one our graduates, the effect it has had on the individual is very noticeable they are a lot more confident in their work and speaking to senior people and managing workloads. Feedback from direct manager is that they have seen a massive improvement with the individual”. 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐬! One of the trainees asked the senior leader, “What should we do to reach your position?” The response was both profound and thought-provoking: The leader responded - “Everyone’s journey is unique. You can’t expect Lata Mangeshkar to play cricket like Sachin Tendulkar, and vice versa. Similarly, don’t compare my journey with yours. Let me ask you, how many centuries did Sachin score in his entire cricket career?” Someone answered, “51 in test matches.” He quickly calculated, “That’s 51 centuries out of 400 innings, or about 12.76%. A great player like Sachin scored centuries only 12.76% of the time. Now, considering an average 40-year corporate journey, how many years do you think will be the best?” This moment made me think deeply. Are we really chasing success by comparing our journeys to others? Or are we trusting our own paths and finding happiness in them? The leader made a valid point: in a long and successful career, only a handful of years may stand out as truly exceptional. The rest will be a mix of challenges and growth. We should focus on the journey and not just the results. If we find value in every step, the end result will always be rewarding. A few additional thoughts: • 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬: Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Don’t be disheartened by setbacks; they are a part of the journey. Even if you think you are taking a few steps backward, always remember that to win a long jump competition, the athlete always steps back first. • 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐬: Every achievement, no matter how small, is a step forward. Recognize and celebrate these moments. • 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡: Everyone’s journey is different. Trust that your unique path will lead you to where you’re meant to be. This summer, she had the opportunity to intern with Marriott International at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, working alongside two outstanding mentors, Nadine Johnson-Smith and Sara Pace.
