20 years of growing brands with edutainment • My newsletter shows you how • My studio does it for you
I didn’t get into many fights at school. But one time I thought I was gonna get my butt kicked: The school bully says to me in the corridor: “Adam, meet me here at lunch.” *Gulp* I go. (Wondering what Ryu would do) The bully shows up. And says to me: “I absolutely LOVE this game. We need to plan tournaments.” Huh? One of the games I made & sold on the schoolyard was so popular, even the bruisers wanted to get involved! Sedgwick learned a similar lesson in today’s comic. I had 2 big take-aways that day: – Do work so good your enemies become fans – Practice your “Shoryuken” PS Which of the 2 take-aways are you working on? 😂 -- ⭐ More marketing comics → follow Adam Fairhead ⭐ Learn edutainment → subscribe to my newsletter (link in Featured)

There are some issues in this story. 1) Taking over $25,000 in student loans to make $13,000 a year is illogical. People need to stop doing that. I'd argue that her game income is a trade skill and it makes her more money than her writing education does. Logically, that means her writing is actually her expensive hobby, not her games. If your education choice leads to an expensive hobby like so many others, stop paying for that education thinking it is anything more. 2) Based on math, they have a household income of $133,000. After an estimated 30% tax (federal, state, misc), they end up with an income of only $7,758 per month. That isn't sustainable with over $8,000 a month in expenses. Dave Ramsey would not be impressed. 3) Everyone knows that the "game master" of Dungeons & Dragons is a Dungeon Master. So DM would be the correct abbreviation, not GM. The DMD site uses the correct language, but this article for some reason uses GM, which is definitely a thing but in other environments. DMing is definitely a critical role in the gameplay of D&D, so I am curious how good/professionally paid DMs are. @MannShorts ( https://lnkd.in/gRGdkEsc )does some hilarious videos of how strangely D&D campaigns can go. 4) She doesn't actually make $37k a year leading D&D games. The headline is wrong. Regardless, I'm actually curious what her "hourly" equivalent rate is hosting games. $375 for 3 hours is a hearty rate, but there's probably a good amount of prep that goes into hosting and some overhead (business administration, advertising, etc) to consider. But also, $37k isn't more than the median income in Utah, and includes secondary employment, so I hope she isn't working 60 hours a week to hit that. I do like the idea of game-based careers. I am a huge fan of gamification too. There is probably a lot of happiness to be had there, when financially viable and sustainable. I have a couple of old friends who have opened game-based shops (one game store, one game based brewery) and they are still functioning over a decade late, so it can be done. Cheers to them! I just don't like how people pitch things poorly or incompletely. This was written by a hooman.
People are surprised to learn that 36-year-old Mari Murdock is a professional game master, a role in which she organizes and narrates tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. Since 2021, Murdock’s main source of income has been working for Dungeon Master Direct, a Utah-based company that specializes in online and in-person tabletop roleplaying game sessions that range from $375 to $750. She makes $24,000 as a dungeon master for the company, plus another $13,000 teaching writing at nearby Westminster University in Salt Lake City. Here's how Murdock was able to turn her hobby into a career: https://cnb.cx/4bbRu9i

I've got some exciting news with my FYP! 🎉 To sum up the project, it is a physical artefact, a game demo, that will be made in Unreal Engine. It has been inspired by low-stress games and Bagpuss; the TV show. I am in the Main Development stage of my project now, which entails creating the game demo. My main focus currently has been creating the riddle puzzles for the player and refining the blockout I made. I have now done the puzzle's riddles, settings, and solutions for Section 3 and they are in working order, with a couple of bugs. With Section 3 completed, that is all the puzzles done for the demo! 🎉 I have one thing left to do before playtesting, and that is refining the blockout of the final room. Then, playtesting time 🎮 I'll share the results of the playtests when they are done. The link below is the video of Section 3 puzzles working, to a degree, and the door to the final section opening up.
