This podcast is a game-changer. Celebrating CREED's 2nd anniversary, I'm joined by Paul Weisenfeld, Executive Vice President at RTI and a key figure in the Coalition for Racial and Ethnic Equity in Development’s (CREED) Board Executive Committee. Get ready for some real talk! Paul shares CREED's remarkable journey, from its infancy to shaking up the development sector. Senior leaders like Paul are spearheading change, advocating for racial equity in their organizations. His insights into CREED's triumphs and trials paint a vivid picture of transformation in the development sector. From his own journey since the '80s to championing authentic leadership and tackling biases head-on, Paul's words hit home when he shared a vivid example of when he became possibly the first black mission director for an agency in a predominantly white environment and realized he was “code-switching” his behavior to fit in. He realized the weight of representation and the importance of authenticity. "In 2006, I became a Mission Director in Peru for USAID, possibly the first black Mission Director in South America. I navigated the dual worlds of predominantly white professional settings and my predominantly black upbringing. This led to a style of code-switching until recent years when I embraced authentic leadership." Paul's reflections shed light on CREED's evolution and the collaborative efforts of senior leaders in reshaping racial equity in development. "In the development sector, authentic leadership means confronting biases head-on and collaborating to drive racial equity." Fearlessly navigating uncomfortable conversations, Paul urges us to confront systemic issues with courage. His passion for inclusivity is infectious, inspiring us to drive change authentically. By recognizing our role in addressing these issues, he empowers leaders to take action. As we wrapped up, Paul's stories left me not just informed but energized. Thank you, Paul, for sharing your journey. Join me in exploring CREED's initiatives and embarking on our journey toward a more equitable future. In the words of Dr. Bernice A. King, "We can light up the world without burning it down." This powerful reminder serves as a beacon for how we approach accountability and justice. It's possible to stand firm against injustice while preserving the integrity of our relationships. Success at the cost of relational ties is a pyrrhic victory. #Pyrrhic #Victory: is an adjective that describes a victory or achievement that is gained at a great cost, often causing so much harm or damage to the victor that it negates any sense of achievement or advantage. In striving for a community grounded in equity and justice, we must focus on building bridges, not burning them. It’s through compassionate action and love-centered leadership that we find a way to hold people accountable and still move forward together. Labeling individuals and casting shame or blame upon them often backfires, serving to alienate rather than educate. It creates barriers to understanding and cooperation, which are crucial for genuine change. Positive transformation is nurtured in an environment of respect and constructive dialogue. When we approach others with empathy, recognizing that each person is more than their worst act, we foster a culture of growth and learning. Change is most effective when it's driven by encouragement and shared values, not by pointing fingers. By focusing on actions and behaviors instead of labels, we pave the way for the meaningful change we wish to see in our communities and organizations. #CommunityBuilding #LoveCenteredLeadership #InclusiveExcellence

As we celebrate Independence Day, we’ve been reflecting on how “independence” intersects with our work at Community Solutions. Using the definition of Independence as “...not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct, etc: thinking or acting for oneself…” We strive to support clients to recognize their expertise and challenge systems or environments that prevent them from thriving. Through organizational development, community engagement, and systems change, we work with our clients to create more effective systems and organizations that can fully step into their leadership to drive the work that they do. #CommunitySolutions #Independence #Redefining

Taking note of how easy our “togetherness” is unraveling—data for what the work is in 2024 as leaders, interveners, creators and as human beings. The world is inviting us to hold the whole of it—bringing all of the resources of our lived experiences. Our collective unattended to bias, internalized “isms” and cultural/historic unfinished business has left its hiding place—nothing can be bound forever. And this is cumulative. Racial equity without attending to the function of race in a system doesn’t work. Ignoring the invitation of intersectionality to support intervening in human systems (at every level of system) doesn’t work. Centering “historically marginalized groups” without understanding the motivating energies of whiteness/maleness and the seductions of privilege (across any and every social group identity) doesn’t work—including the global stage. You’re not “sharing power” if you’re not willing to reveal where the power actually lives. You can’t take anybody someplace you’ve never been—and then celebrate a “win” for change. This is the year of doing the deep healing of “you” in service of the leadership that is required. Let’s go. 📸: Elizabeth Catlett “Harriet”(1975)

There's a battle being waged against DEI. And to be honest, I've struggled with the concept myself. DEI has been co-opted and colonized over the years to suit people who have head knowledge of laws and definitions, but hold very little empathy for the people who's lives are impacted by the need for those boundaries. The reality is many people lack self-awareness, empathy, and decency to start with. So to get anywhere, we need to bring humanity into the equation. #dei #socialimpact ##civilrights #action #intellect #leadership *DEI = the concept of integrating diverse people and concepts, and equitable and inclusive practices, into organizations.

🌟 **Understanding Integrity: Lessons from David Brooks** 🌟 In his insightful book, "How to Know a Person," author David Brooks highlights a crucial truth: those who operate unethically or unfairly inevitably face the consequences of their actions. This isn't just a personal failing; it can manifest in broader societal issues, especially in governance and within the black community. When individuals or leaders prioritize self-interest over the common good, they sow seeds of distrust and division. It's essential for us to recognize this 'cancer' that undermines our values and the very fabric of our communities. Overcoming these challenges requires collective effort, accountability, and a commitment to ethical leadership. By fostering transparency, empathy, and a genuine desire for justice, we can work towards a future where fairness prevails and every voice is heard. Let's engage in conversations that promote integrity and uplift our communities. Change begins with us! 💪🏾✨ #DavidBrooks #Integrity #Community #EthicalLeadership #Change #Empowerment

In order to live with dignity we need to have a sense of: 1. Fairness: leads to justice 2. Empathy: leads to compassion 3. Integrity: leads to trust All three elements come into play when there is a vision in an organisation or society. A visionary must come up from within to bring and keep the organization or society on track. #visionispower #visionaryleadership #individualleadership

So many of us can relate and we get it: She understands that most of us will never be afforded the grace of failing forward. ✨ 🔸 We will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth. 🔸 If we bankrupt a business or choke in a crisis, we don’t get a second, third, or fourth chance. 🔸 If things don’t go our way, we don’t have the luxury of whining or cheating others to get further ahead. 🔸 No, we don’t get to change the rules, so we always win. 🔸 If we see a mountain in front of us, we don’t expect there to be an escalator waiting to take us to the top. 🚶🏽♂️ ✨ We put our heads down. ✨ We get to work in America. ✨ We do something. 💪🏽 — Michelle Obama, DNC 2024 #MichelleObama, #DNC2024, #Leadership, #Perseverance, #WorkEthic, #AmericanDream, #Inspiration, #NoExcuses, #GenerationalWealth, #FailingForward, #Motivation, #HardWork, #DoSomething

Our Quote of the Week illustrates two of the defining characteristics of Sargent Shriver’s leadership style: the prioritization of strong values, and consistency between words and deeds. And a lack of these characteristics, argues Shriver, causes both disenchantment and harm, particularly among younger generations. https://lnkd.in/gvZn9uK6
