Gear: does it matter, does it not matter? I think it’s a super nuanced question with the right answer being different depending on who you ask and where they’re at. If you spend any amount of time on film maker youtube you’ll hear a resounding sentiment that “gear doesn’t matter”. But what I can say is that in my production company, gear ABSOLUTELY matters. It matters to our clients; we target working with agencies and communications companies with creative directors and personnel who have experience in film and know the difference. Gear matters because it inspires you to shoot in ways and pigeon-holes you into certain types of operation and limitations are the breeding ground ground of creativity. It matters because we’re film makers, we literally make our art with the gear. If gear doesn’t matter than write a book. You don’t need any gear at all. All that to say, we’ve upgraded our tier 1 camera package at the Kairos Creative Co. Were excited to welcome the RED Digital Cinema V Raptor X to our lineup and we’re excited to serve our clients with it 🙏🏼

The Film Industry’s Real Lessons from Summer 2024 — by Trace De La Torre As we wrap up another summer of box-office successes and failures, the question on everyone’s mind is, “What can we learn?” It’s tempting to scrutinize which films soared, which flopped, trying to tap what “the audience wants”— but it’s too narrow and pushes us to chase fading trends, losing sight of the bigger picture. Here’s the truth: Storytelling is not an assembly line—nor should it be. Yeah, yeah…data can be a helpful tool, but if we rely on it too much, we end up cloning soulless copies of past successes. And that’s where the industry starts to yo-yo. Think about it. How often have we heard that audiences are shrinking? That films are “overscreened”? Ok. So, where’s the hard data to back that up? Are there really too many screens, or is this just convenient corporate spin? The lesson this summer isn’t about following trends or shrinking markets. It’s about honing audiences’ diverse film tastes and individuality of EACH film. As creators, we must remember that audiences CRAVE AUTHENTICITY. Films that break through the noise are often the ones that take risks, challenging the norms of genre and storytelling. I'll continue to say it. Every company will become a media company. I don't care if you're selling tech, ketchup, dog leashes, or pictures of Abraham Lincoln (I'd buy one). You will need to think of how you're going to use video media to get your message out. And not just one commercial, TikTok ad, or Super Bowl spot. You need a constant drip strategy. Does that mean you need to spend BIG bucks like Best Buy? NO. The big guys are not at an extreme advantage. In fact, many are at a disadvantage because of their own bureaucracy, processes and slow turn around. That's not to mention viewers social platforms and YouTube often trust the local underdog over the institutional giants. Those problems can be overcome, but they're problems a lot of us don't have. TL;DR = Your company is also a media company. Embrace it. ---- Am I wrong?
