As an active job seeker, I often browse LinkedIn for leads and sometimes, I come across a post like this one, that deeply resonates with my own experiences. Reading this, I felt inspired to share a little about the twists and turns of my own journey through the rollercoaster that is job hunting. Over the past year, I’ve sent nearly 200 job applications to various organisations, sometimes applying for multiple roles within the same organisation. Initially, I relied on my confidence and skills to apply, network and follow up. But as my application tally kept growing, it slowly started chipping away at my motivation and confidence. Consistently looking up openings, customizing the resume and cover letter for each opportunity and filling up tedious employment portals eventually began to impact my mental health and self image. The glorification of ideas like ‘hustle' and 'grind” had me questioning if what I was doing was enough. The lack of response from the hiring side didn’t help. I couldn’t agree more with Joe Kurle when he talks about the radio silence on the organisations’ part. It makes an already difficult process more frustrating as we keep holding out hope for an answer that will probably never come. After a point, it’s not only disheartening, it's almost humiliating to feel reduced to just another pdf with “action verbs.” I often wonder if those on the other side of the screen remember or even realize what it’s like to be in my position- the self doubt that creeps in, the relentless fear and anxiety, the looming visa date and, above all, the pressures of being here on the sacrifices of those back home. It’s not that I’m unaware that these are big organizations fielding hundreds of applicants each day, but I do believe that a little compassion and timely response from their end could go a long way for applicants like myself. This post is not to demotivate anyone but to share the reality of this process. If you or someone you know is in a similar position, please know that you’re not alone. Honestly, that has stopped meaning anything to me but I know how lonely and unnerving this process can be. Feel free to reach out to vent, chat, talk about anything even if not job related. Also, if I still have your attention, 1. I would really appreciate any leads or recommendations for opportunities related to corporate sustainability, specifically ESG consulting and/or GHG accounting and reduction strategy. 2. I have spent the past year also trying to upgrade myself. I have taken a couple of courses and also taught myself Python for data analytics- a personal achievement that I’m very proud of. 3. I am also on the look out for outlets that give a platform to stories and discussions around the job hunting process. This is just a glimpse of my experience and I’d love to speak to someone looking for diverse voices of international students to talk about the reality of the current job market, especially for POCs on a short visa. #opentowork

Aspiring to break into climatetech? Since Cascade Climate’s launch last week, we’ve received dozens of applications from candidates interested in joining the team. Here are three tips for strengthening your profile for any climate org. 🏋🏾♀️ No candidate has a profile that matches the job description exactly. Be able to articulate strengths you can bring to the team from day one based on transferable skills and the areas where you may need more support to do the job well. For many candidates, this may look like needing specific resources to get up to speed on the relevant products or technologies the company is developing or supporting (mentorship, training, etc.). 🔬If you have a non-technical background, don’t be afraid to do a little extra homework to understand the foundational science of the technology. This may not look like reading technical research papers (although it could), but there are many beginner-friendly podcasts, newsletters, and websites that can help you learn the language quickly. Some of my favorites for CDR are My Climate Journey, This is CDR, CarbonPlan, Carbon180, The Carbon Curve, Reversing Climate Change, and The Great Unwind [links below]. 📈If you are interested in joining an early stage startup but haven’t worked in that environment previously, highlight in your resume and interviews any experience you have implementing or improving processes, gaining buy-in from a variety of stakeholders, and generally taking initiative to ideate and execute(!) on new ideas in whatever context you’ve been working in. This is an exciting time to be working in the climate space. Showing enthusiasm for the mission of an org is helpful, demonstrating clear ability to support that mission is even better. ICYMI: Yesterday's SF Climate Week panel on "Forging Your Path in Climate Tech" was full of insights into what it's really like to make the switch. The thing about rebuilding the entire economy is that it can be overwhelming, daunting, and exciting all at the same time. We're rethinking how we move about, how we feed the world, and the buildings we live in, among other things. Which we need a lot of people, from all sorts of backgrounds, and skillsets. The journey looks a little different for everyone, and our panelists Natalie K., Alicia Harmon O’Meara, Selina Tobaccowala, and Jill Macri shared a lot of actionable advice for making the switch. #ClimateTech #ClimateJobs

Perception: Work on Climate recently found that career switchers wanting to work on climate solutions are often unsure if climate jobs are for people like them or if their skills are useful (research here: https://bit.ly/4bcJyVe) Reality: Climate companies need a variety of roles beyond engineers and scientists (and lots of those too!). Yet, breaking in is daunting and nebulous for most everyone making the switch. Yesterday's SF Climate Week panel on "Forging Your Path in Climate Tech" with Natalie K., Alicia Harmon O’Meara, Selina Tobaccowala, and Jill Macri dropped a lot of sage advice on how to approach your search. Here are the key takeaways: 📝 Get smart on what's going on in climate tech. There are a wealth of resources and learning communities you can tap into: Terra.do, Climatebase, the MCJ Collective podcasts, AirMiners Boot Up, Sightline Climate (CTVC), Climate Draft, Young Professionals in Energy, & #OpenDoorClimate. 💪 Take stock of your skills instead of focusing on titles or roles alone. Tailor your resume, application, and LinkedIn (especially LinkedIn). After you apply, reach out to at least 3 people at your top companies to get to know them and share more about the value you can add. ✔ Know that switching industries isn't linear. You might not land the dream title at your top company straight away, and that's okay. Transitions are full of side-steps, trying out a big company where there are resources to teach you about the sector before you can make the leap and add value at a startup. It's all part of the journey. The biggest takeaway? People who are already working in the climate can't wait to meet you! Most are generous with their time and networks. We're building a massive new economy and need your diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives to go further, faster. I've sent out 50 applications so far during my career transition into climate. In my climate education, Sankey diagrams have been used everywhere to help visualize the flow of resources, electricity, green house gases, earth's materials, and more. Applying this visual tool to my job search revealed some useful thoughts and insights: ⭐ "Damn. Only 50?" was my gut reaction, telling myself I needed to work harder. However, 50 apps has been almost 3 per week, which lines up with my original goals of focusing on quality over quantity and prioritizing making human connections over blasting my resume endlessly into the digital void. ⭐ Direct individual outreach has gotten more responses than cold applications. Using platforms like #OpenDoorClimate (https://lnkd.in/eWUpbESK from Daniel Hill) and direct LinkedIn messages has allowed me to meet some helpful people. I plan to share a separate diagram illustrating this journey so far. ⭐ I'm searching for roles in marketing and communications, ideally in content and video production. Some organizations in climate aren't at the stage where they can hire with such creative specificity yet. I've also noticed very few organizations who can have fully realized the power of high-quality, optimistic, simple, human-centered storytelling, especially with video. I hope to be able to push the conversation in the right direction. ⭐ A lot of radio silence involved in the job hunt. Most organizations won't provide updates, any transparency on the process, or an automated email. For those that do take a humane approach, it speaks wonders.
