In honor of #InternationalChildhoodCancerDay, let’s recognize the advancements St. Baldrick’s International Scholar, Dr. Jehad Almaliti, is making: Dr. Almaliti has developed more than 60 novel substances that are very promising for fighting 2 types of childhood brain cancers: #glioblastoma and #medulloblastoma. Even more inspiring, preliminary results show that over half a dozen of these compounds are very potent in killing these brain cancer cells. To top it off, these compounds have been tested and found to penetrate the protective barrier around the brain, a crucial step for their effectiveness in treating #cancer. Dr. Almaliti has been sharing these groundbreaking findings at conferences across the globe, from his native country Jordan to the United States. Now, he's gearing up to take the next steps: securing patents, publishing this groundbreaking #research, and evaluating these promising leads for efficacy in brain cancer models. #researchishope #researchmatters

We spoke to Professor Richard Grose about his lab's latest study, which uses mini-tumours to understand how pancreatic cancer coerces normal cells to help it spread to other tissues. The new paper has been featured on the cover of the latest issue of the Journal of Pathology. 💬 Professor Grose says: "I think the work will make a difference to patients in the long run, because it helps us to understand how pancreatic cancer invades – not just from the cancer cell perspective, but also how the surrounding cells are co-opted to drive the invasive process. Colon cancer, also known as bowel cancer, develops in the colon (the large bowel or the large intestine). But this cancer is highly treatable if diagnosed in its early stages, and it is one of the very few cancers that can be prevented through screening. Many European countries have national screening programmes, most commonly for everyone of 50-74 years of age. If this is the case in your country, you should be automatically contacted after your 50th birthday for regular screening examinations. We're thrilled to introduce, Dr Emily Gruber, one of our grant recipients for 2024. ✨ Join us for an exclusive information session with Dr Emily, an emerging leukaemia researcher based at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and University of Melbourne. 🧬 About 1,100 Australians are diagnosed each year with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a blood cancer with a less than 30% 5-year survival rate. Despite recent advances in therapies, most patients relapse and face harsh side effects from treatments like chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants. Dr Emily's Cure Cancer project aims to explore AML's biology for new therapies, with the aim to improve patient outcomes by identifying new biological processes that can be targeted during treatment to eliminate AML cells with minimal impact on normal, healthy tissues. The second article in our #multicancertest (MCT) explainer series is out now! MCTs have the potential to induce a paradigm change in early detection and diagnosis by reducing late-stage diagnosis of #cancer, helping to alleviate system inefficiencies and improve outcomes for patients. However, currently there are many unanswered questions. In this latest article, Sowmiya Moorthie and I discuss some of the ways MCEDs could be used as part of screening programmes and the key questions they raise, including how MCEDs could be integrated into current cancer screening programmes, and considerations for the evaluation and implementation of any future multi-cancer screening programme.
