Back from a whirlwind week in #Washington, discussing #Focus - #theASMLWay and this company's grip on the global semiconductor industry. Bridging the worlds of supercomplex technology and superpowers, two main topics surfaced: 1) How on earth did #ASML manage to create its powerful monopoly in lithography and why did the U.S drop the ball on this crucial technology for #semiconductors? Short answer: focus and a long-term vision. Add a spoonful of serendipity, tons of Dutch directness, and engineers from all over the world. 2) Stricter #export controls because of U.S.-China rivalry have resulted in a #litholimbo, lowering the bar for ASML's machines going to #China. American equipment makers are also being restricted. Could U.S. tech be out-designed and could China ever catch up in litho too? Short answer: yes and, eventually, yes. 🌟 Witness the unveiling of a milestone moment: the debut image of the inaugural wafer illuminated by our cutting-edge high NA machine at ASML. A vision realized just a decade after the concept first emerged from the mind of my colleague Jan Van Schoot. This marvel stands as a testament to human ingenuity, embodying the pinnacle of complexity. Imagine this: a laser meticulously directed at liquefied tin droplets, birthing light itself. This light, then guided and manipulated through vast, ultra-flat mirrors, each boasting a thickness variation of less than a single atom. But the feat doesn't end there. To imprint this light onto the wafer below, we propel multiple components, each weighing around 100 kilograms, at speeds rivaling that of Formula 1 cars—all while ensuring perfect synchronization. And the final precision achieved on the wafer? Astounding, measuring below a billionth of a meter. (Yes, that's amongst others - my role :-)) As we stand on the precipice of the next phase, anticipation brews for even deeper integration, continuous learning, and the ongoing mastery required to tame this technological titan, extracting those elusive nanometers.
