A good old street fair 🎠🎡
In this episode of Room For Revenue, I visited the Normal Heights Street Fair!
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝐭𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲:
➡️ Parking lots
➡️ The Taco Shop Theory
➡️ The Upsell during the pre-sale
Did you know local community events like this not only help bring people into new communities but, can triple and even quadruple your city or venues revenue?!
𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱-𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁?
What themed event has generated your venue the most revenue?
Just a heads-up: the views shared here are mine alone and not associated with the Normal Heights Street Fair. These are my opinions on where there is room for revenue at this particular location and not a reflection of other locations or the corporation.

Happy 4th of July! As cities across the nation light up the sky with their fireworks displays, let's also celebrate the meticulous planning, coordination, and execution that went on behind the scenes – using the #Baldrige Excellence Framework!
💥 Criteria 1: Leadership - City officials and event organizers demonstrated visionary leadership by planning a large-scale public event that celebrates a national holiday.
💥 Criteria 2: Customer Focus - The event was designed to entertain and inspire residents, while also keeping them safe.
💥 Criteria 3: Strategic Planning - Organizers developed a strategic plan for the event, considering factors like budget, logistics, safety, and entertainment value.
💥 Criteria 4: Measurement, Analysis, and Knowledge Management - Organizers will gather data on attendance, feedback, and areas for improvement to enhance future events.
💥 Criteria 5: Workforce - A dedicated team with diverse skills planned and now will work together to ensure the smooth execution of the event.
💥 Criteria 6: Operations - Clear processes have been established for everything from firework selection and timing to crowd control and cleanup.
💥 Criteria 7: Results - A successful firework display delivers a positive experience for attendees, showcasing the city's commitment to community engagement.
Holiday traditions like today takes hard work from dedicated teams, and this is just one example of how Baldrige can be applied to the nitty gritty along the way! #performanceexcellence#inaction
Feeling very inspired after Tuesday night's Salon Canberra event ‘Enhancing Communities through Infrastructure, Placemaking and Public Art’. The beautiful theatrette at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia was completely full. Thank you to Catherine Carter for providing this opportunity.
There were many takeaways from the panel that stuck with me, but my favourite was from Nikos Kalogeropoulos:
We are creating fewer reasons to step into the public realm. We create bigger, more elaborate homes, with home gyms, home theatres etc. We drive from these ultra-comfortable homes straight to our sterile, climate-controlled offices and then home again. And yet, so often are the memorable moments made elsewhere, in the public realm. In the spaces between destinations.
This was a thought-provoking moment for me, that something seemingly trivial can have a huge impact on the community and its engagement.
We need to include art and the public realm in our daily lives. How much beauty and culture do we miss? How many moments of connection do we simply, subconsciously, refuse to experience?

Remarkably clever. 🌟 In a time where the datafication of everything now includes humans, it’s incredible to see such a clever and elegant representation of what makes a company extraordinary—its people.
In today’s hybrid and remote work environments, having a central, persistent 3D visual presence of the workforce feels so timely and relevant. It captures the essence of our colleagues in a way that’s more aligned with our real-world interactions and thoughts than the flatness of a name on a spreadsheet or an email address.
When I think of my teammates, I envision them FAR CLOSER to something like a 3D model in my mind when compared to something reductively unoriginal like headshots or data points. This brilliant installation truly challenges the standardization of human representation, and it’s got me thinking about how I can implement something similar with my own team as Gemba grows.
This idea is not only clever but deceptively brilliant, showcasing our ability to present data in ways that are more human, more connected, and more appropriate to how we live and think.
💭 How do you see your team? What are some unique ways you represent your workforce?

We recorded live at Wieden + Kennedy NY office last night. In their Portland HQ, they have framed photos of all staff members on the walls in the lobby. In NY they’re all three dimensional figurines. Amazing to see. Thanks for hosting us last night. Next stop is Los Angeles, Nov. 7th at TBWA\Chiat\Day
Education doesn't always have to look so formal - PowerPoints, sitting in chairs, business casual attire...you can see it in your head right now, can't you?
It can look like leadership getting creative. You can break up the many tools of success into bite-sized bits that are easier to absorb and remember. You can wear jeans, T-shirts, and even throw in the occasional letterman's jacket to up the cool factor.
We recently held a Real Estate Fair at our office for a chance to change the pace while still offering quality education. We were excited at the turnout and heard from so many attendees that the fair not only taught them about real estate but that it energized and motivated them to get out into the field. It didn't take incredibly more time to plan than a normal workshop and the casual atmosphere made it easier for people to engage in conversations, ask critical questions, and pick the brains of some of our most talented team.
We call that a win.
