I wanted to share a past experience from an interview where I was asked if I have experience in technical writing 🤔. The interviewer suggested that I might not be a good fit for a technical writing role, but I'd like to share my response... Hiring Technical Writers that can deliver high quality content may be challenging. To ensure you hire the best hands for your projects, you have to position your brand to attract top candidates, and specify exactly what you want in a talent. The following checklist can help you achieve this: 1.    Ensure that your brand is visionary and growing fast enough to support the ambitions of top talents. If your talents are growing faster than your brand, they will definitely leave. 2.    Ensure that your compensation is competitive for the level of experience you seek. 3.    Clearly specify the attributes you seek in a suitable candidate. - Do you want talents with 2 years of Technical writing experience? - Do you want candidates that have worked for similar brands? - Do you want initiative talents that have founded a brand of their own? - Do you want talents who have been consistently writing and delivering within self-set deadlines? Answer these questions and use the answers to create a table of criteria to make a new hire. Do not deviate from this table of criteria during the recruitment process. 4.    Clearly stipulate the scope of the Technical writing role in your company. Ensure that candidates are aware of what they will be doing once they’re onboarded. - Will the Technical writer be working on documentations or will they be delivering only marketing content for your brand? With these in place, you can proceed with the next step which is to announce your vacancy.
