🌐 ⚖️ Last week, 8 international NGOs, the Coalition for the ICC and 2 associate partners came together to launch the “Global Initiative Against Impunity: Making Justice Work”, a strategic partnership co-funded by the European Union Local partners, victims & survivors were at the centre stage of the #MakingJusticeWork launch event, sharing powerful testimonies about what justice means to them in a video underscoring the real-world impacts of impunity and the urgent need for action ➡️ https://lnkd.in/egwdrKGM Co-organised by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Commission, the event brought together dignitaries, civil society representatives & human rights advocates. "Achieving #justice for victims of grave crimes and human rights violations cannot be achieved only by States, and NGOs have played a significant role during the last 30 years," reaffirmed the ICC President, Judge Tomoko Akane, in a keynote address. "The Global Initiative's aim is to promote inclusive, comprehensive justice & accountability for serious human rights violations worldwide. It is not just a programme. It is a commitment & a call for collective action" highlighted Myriam Marcuello, Global Initiative Against Impunity’s Programme Coordinator. And finally, a look at my poster publication in the MEPI TLS final conference. The poster discussed the systemic oppression of Lebanese women’s rights in an effort to preserve the Lebanese Secterian System.

In a significant event addressing the critical issues of Human Trafficking and Human Rights, the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta, convened a panel discussion on 30 November 2023 in Geneva. The panel aimed to provide up-to-date information and shed light on the multifaceted nature of contemporary slavery, encompassing forced labor, human trafficking, child exploitation, and other modern forms of enslavement; challenge misconceptions and stereotypes that obstruct a comprehensive understanding of this global issue, underscoring its prevalence even in developed countries; foster a dialogue for policy reform at local, national, and international levels; and, encourage collaborative efforts among NGOs, governments, businesses, religious groups, and civil society to unite resources and strategies in the fight against contemporary slavery. https://lnkd.in/esus9Vt3

Today is an important day in the fighting against gender-based violence: it is the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Istanbul Convention at 1 August 2014, after receiving its 10th ratification. Ratifying parties have been implementing the Istanbul Convention at different levels: some of them have revised their legislations, some have built an integrated networks of cooperations, others have yet to deal with difficult political landscape, aiming at overcoming stereotypes and excessive politicization. But the main thing is that “all roads lead to the humans”, and the crucial point of the Istanbul convention is “the highest level of protection” of human rights of women and other victims of GBV

A strong #CivilSociety and active #HumanRightsDefenders are essential for a robust democracy. They conduct vital tasks, contributing to the countries’ prosperity, and influencing political changes. Yet, human rights advocates face numerous challenges when carrying out their work. From harassment and threats to a lack of straightforward assistance, gaps in their protection and support within #Europe have been found and need to be addressed. I recently worked in the organisation of a Roundtable on a Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Civil Society in Brussels, Belgium, hosted at EFTA Surveillance Authority. During two days. #HRDs and representatives of different #CSOs and regions gathered to discuss how to improve their safety and handle the threats and challenges they face. Additionally, we brainstormed on what elements this new mechanism should have to fill in the voids of the current schemes. Several #CSOs took on part in it, including: Civil Society Europe (CSE) , European Civic Forum, CNVOS (Centre for Information Service, Co-operation and Development of NGOs), Stefan Batory Foundation The meeting was led by a taskforce composed of Amnesty International European Institutions Office, Civil Rights Defenders, European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), Front Line Defenders, FIDH - International Federation for Human Rights, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, Protection International, Civil Liberties Union for Europe. Other associate members involved were the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions, ILGA-Europe, and the European Network Against Racism Aisbl (ENAR). Additionally, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 hosted a breakfast briefing to further discuss this topic with representatives of the Member States and other organisations. After a month working on the preparation of this Roundtable, I would like to warmly thank all those people involved for their support and guidance. During this experience, I put into practice multiple personal skills while learning from others' experiences. I am confident that the insightful discussions we had will lead to improvements in the protection of human rights advocates and enable them to carry out their crucial work safely.

Today (August 22), Amnesty International Australia made a significant submission to the independent review of Queensland’s Human Rights Act 2019. Since its implementation in January 2020, the Act has fostered a culture of human rights and promoted critical dialogue within Parliament, government departments, and communities across Queensland. Key Points from the Submission: - Strengthening Human Rights Protections: Amnesty advocates for the inclusion of a participation duty, enabling people to have a say in decisions that affect them. - Independent Legal Action: The submission calls for a direct and independent cause of action, empowering individuals to bring human rights matters to court. - Expanded Rights: Amnesty suggests adding protections for the right to housing and a healthy environment. - Removing the Override Provision: The removal of this provision is recommended to ensure stronger and more consistent human rights protections. These proposed changes aim to further protect and respect the human rights of everyone in Queensland, moving towards a future where these rights are upheld for all. Last August, WACC partners from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East came together to share insights, best practices, and stories of change. And they explored how to protect human rights — especially of marginalized and vulnerable people — on digital platforms.   Their digital justice agenda is guiding communication rights advocates in the path to the 20-year review of the WSIS Process (#WSIS+20) in 2025. I consider disinformation to be the greatest challenge our societies face today. The EU LGBTIQ Survey findings by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights revealed that gradual progress in law and society in Europe is confronted by rise of hate motivated violence and harassment, fuelled by online hatred and disinformation campaigns against LGBTIQ people. What the European Parliament and the Commission call FIMI (Foreign Interference and Manipulation of information) 2024 is an election year for about 70 democratic countries around the world. And our response to disinformation is critical.The EU has now new tools to confront it, suche as the Digital Services Act but Inevitably it starts with raising awareness of the public and making each one of us able to recognize and fight it as it threatens our values, our world and our future. The 2024 annual report on the application of the EU Charter of #FundamentalRights is out today!   The Charter report focuses on funding to promote, protect and enforce fundamental rights and highlights the importance of funding for the practical implementation and application of the Charter. The report shows efforts taken by EU countries, other donors and fundamental rights bodies in the field of funding. During this mandate (2019-2024), the European Commission has strengthened its focus on funding to support the implementation of EU values and fundamental rights, including by managing the substantially increased budget of the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme.
