In today's world, AI is becoming an integral part of our daily lives and business processes. With this integration comes the necessity for robust regulation to ensure ethical and safe development, safeguarding the fundamental rights of users. Following its precedent with the GDPR, the European Union has once again taken the lead and passed the comprehensive law on Artificial Intelligence, the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act. I'm pleased to share that Semra Islam and I have collaborated on a comprehensive whitepaper focusing on the EU AI Act. This whitepaper explores key aspects of the EU AI Act, including its risk-based approach and the significant obligations of providers, deployers, importers, and distributors of AI systems. I'm grateful for the opportunity to work on this project and for the trust placed in me. I am thankful to the seniors especially Maria Khan and Semra Islam for their continuous guidance throughout this process. The European Union Artificial Intelligence Act has been passed by the European Parliament. It is a remarkable and historical step towards AI governance which will force all organizations using AI systems (whether you are an AI provider, deployer, importer, or a distributor) to meet certain compliance obligations and eventually protect the fundamental rights of individuals in relation to the use of AI. The EU AI Act applies to providers and deployers of AI systems within the European Union as well as to AI providers and deployers from non-EU countries if the AI system’s output is used within the EU. The EU AI Act has a different set of obligations depending on an entity’s role in relation to the use of AI. Semra Islam and Syed Tatheer Kazmi from our team have put together this wonderful document highlighting key aspects of the EU AI Act, it’s risk-based approach, the major obligations for providers and deployers of AI systems as well as of importers and distributors of high-risk AI systems. 🤖 The Wait is Over: #EU #AI #Act in Force The EU's groundbreaking #ArtificialIntelligence Act, the world's first comprehensive AI law, was officially published on July 12, 2024. Effective August 1, 2024, with full enforcement by August 2, 2026, the law establishes strict, risk-based rules for the development, use, and sale of AI systems across all 27 EU member states. Violations could result in fines up to €35 million or 7% of global annual turnover. While the EU AI Act technically takes effect on August 1, 2024, its enforcement unfolds in stages: ➡ February 2, 2025: Rules on prohibited AI uses and general provisions become enforceable. ➡ August 2, 2025: Enforcement begins for most requirements, including governance, notifications, and penalties (except for those specific to GPAI models). However, existing GPAI models have until August 2, 2027, to comply. ➡ August 2, 2026: Full enforcement of the majority of the Act's provisions. ➡ August 2, 2027: Enforcement of Article 6, focusing on high-risk AI systems, begins. As mentioned, this is not an end, it is the start of one more dimension to a rather epic journey on building data management systems in European companies (based on 🇪🇺 regulation) To succeed, we need: - standards and reference architectures - solutions that facilitate compliance - legal agreements and rulebooks That are scalable, robust and easy to adopt and help us putting data into use in European companies. Then we can have competitive edge.

Yesterday, the Australian Government released its interim response to the Safe and Responsible AI Consultation Paper. HTI welcomes this important first step towards AI regulation. In its response, the Government recognises that unregulated AI, particularly in high-risk settings, could lead to serious harms for individuals and Australian society. It has committed to considering stronger guardrails to address high-risk AI, including through voluntary standards and legal rules.    This is an important milestone – we all stand to benefit from AI, but only when there are clear regulatory safeguards in place. Regulation will help to ensure that Australians are protected and that positive AI innovations can flourish.   HTI’s response to the consultation paper called for a comprehensive regulatory reform agenda to be immediately implemented. AI technology is racing ahead, and rapidly changing our society. The European Parliament, Council and Commission recently reached a provisional agreement on the groundbreaking EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). The AI Act is expected to set a new global standard for AI regulation and is set to become law in 2024, with most AI systems needing to comply by 2026. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is bringing new benefits to society and businesses by transforming workplaces and key industries. However, as AI becomes increasingly prevalent in business and daily life, concerns about ethical use and risks arise.
