We are deeply disappointed that provisional psychologists appear ineligible for Commonwealth Prac Payments announced by the Federal Government and we have strongly urged them to reconsider their decision. The decision to leave provisional psychologists without support doesn't make sense for psychologists, patients or the wider community. Dr. Catriona Davis-McCabe FAPS GAICD said today "currently provisional psychologists undertaking compulsory placements as part of their journey to registration are not paid. Expecting provisional psychologists to undertake these placements for free puts psychology out of reach for so many students, which puts even more pressure on the psychology workforce and ultimately does nothing but harm patients who need access to access psychology care. 🗓️ 5143 is the number of days of my life I spent becoming a professionally qualified psychologist. 🏫 It started with 2 years spent studying my A Levels (including psychology) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 It includes 3 years doing my undergraduate psychology degree in south wales. I certainly wasn’t a psychologist yet, what with a psychology degree containing no work with clients at all. It’s theory only. 🥰 It includes time working as a home carer, where I learned so much about dignity, respect & care. 🏢 It includes a few years working in businesses in Milton Keynes where I learned so much about team work, building rapport and being a human. 🌎 It includes 6 months backpacking around the world where I learned about culture and had some fun and incredible adventures. It also provided such wonderful experiences it would help me to reflect and remember across the challenging years to come. 🏥 It includes years working as an assistant psychologist in a mental health hospital and a youth prison. I learned about risk management, professionalism and how to integrate theory and practice. I may now have had ‘psychologist’ in my job title but I still wasn’t a psychologist. I was assisting the work of qualified psychologists. 📚 It includes 3 years as a trainee clinical psychologist where I learned about working across the life span with a wide range of clinical populations. I received supervision and feedback about my clinical work with service users. I most certainly was not yet a psychologist. 💼 Only then when I passed my 6 clinical placements, my thesis and my assignments was I eligible to register with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a practitioner psychologist. 📱 The title of ‘psychologist’ does not come easy. There are no shortcuts. It should be illegal to ‘just call yourself a psychologist’ on social media. But it’s not. 💬 Whatever your profession let me know in the comments how many days it has taken you to become professionally qualified in your role or how many days so far if you’re not yet there! (Google time and date calculator). Perhaps you’re a psychologist, an accountant, a medic, a legal professional. The school psychologist shortage is not a joke. APA highlights a non-surprising fact. There are not enough school psychologists working for students' mental health and welfare. This article talks about a recent "push" on this matter. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) describes that the recommended ratio of school psychologists to students should be 1:500 to ensure students can be well served. The ratio in Texas is about 1:2500. There is an incredible high need for trained people in supporting students with Special Education, for children to receive appropriate Mental Health services.
