Laura's tips are... ⭐ If you are looking to go to University – choose something you will enjoy however research into what careers this could lead to. Could there be another route you could take such as an apprenticeship? Weigh up the pros and cons of achieving a degree full time or completing this ‘on the job’ whilst earning a wage. ⭐ Try to do some work experience to ensure your chosen path is something you will enjoy. ⭐ Speak to others already working in those jobs – what do they like/dislike about their roles- do you think it will make the best of your natural skills and personality? ⭐ Don’t be put off by gender disproportions – if it is a role dominated by one gender- don’t let this put you off if it is something you want to do!

January round up: This month I have met with and provided advice to 71 students. Offering careers advice, listening, exploring and encouraging. We have talked GCSE options, University choices, personal statements, apprenticeships, work experience and even why parents are 'so annoying and keep nagging me to study'. How lucky that I have the dedicated time to be able to do this with each and ever student that comes my way. And I know not everyone gets this time. Based on my observations: employers that interview very selectively for internships & pay market value, tend to convert exceptional talent into full-time employees. In fact, they pay their interns a salary that is very close to what their full-time offers are. For example, from a student: “My interview process with Firm A was amazing. They started off with a logic test and then proceeded w/ 3 rounds of virtual interviews. The last round was me personally with the vice president of Purchasing, which I thought was a sign of care of their interns…compared to Firm B where I had a single round interview w/ 2 younger people in their job rotation program. Also, Firm A is offering me 20% more in salary. Firm B also put a bad taste in my mouth when they made the offer 1.5 months after the interview. And Firm B said that I would have a decision from them a week after my interview, which obviously did not happen.” Prepping for a job interview? Here's how to answer 'What is my biggest weakness?' Demonstrating self-awareness during an interview is huge. I tell my students to always answer the “what is your weakness” question in the context of having a strategy to fix it (explain what you have done about it, actual RESULTS).
