Working professional with skills and experience in various fields now employed part-time in the restaurant food service industry.
Post college graduation in 2016, I wasn’t sure where to look for opportunities to work. In hindsight, I assume it would have been easiest for me to follow in my mom or grandmother’s footsteps in education. Due to my curiosity about other fields and walks of life, I did not consider pursuing that path at all and despite both their well wishes, I was not encouraged to. With a less than stellar online fingerprint during the MySpace era, a liberal arts degree, a low undergraduate gpa, a Spring Semester internship with the Texas House of Representatives, and an infraction with the campus police department at Texas State University, no long term experience to include on my resume. I don’t believe I was any employer’s ideal candidate on paper or in person. I understand how important it is for employees and employers to find a cultural fit for workplace cohesion and how that doesn’t always happen. In my experience, low wage jobs with high turnover aren’t looking for employees to commit to improving the work environment, but for people to fill seats and complete trained tasks in order to earn income and gain access to employee benefits. I’m now 8 years into my career after graduating with a degree in Communication Studies and haven’t had the opportunities I hoped for. I’m not sure if anyone else in my graduating class is experiencing this, but when I see job opportunities that don’t require three references, one or more certifications, an online assessment, a copy of your transcript, an updated resume, cover letter, five years of experience, and a masters degree when you apply for an entry level role you that may not contact you for an interview, I try to spread the word.

How to hire - Another way to use Ruth’s Rule #3: You are hiring a new dispatcher. Her salary is $20/hour plus 30% benefits. The gross margin of this department is 48% and you want a 10% net profit. What are the sales revenues that the company has to generate to pay her wages? Total salary including benefits: $20 X 2080 X 1.3 = $54,080 Sales = $54,080/(48%-10%) = $54,080/38% = $142,315.79 Can you increase revenues by $142, 315.79? If the answer is yes, then hire that person for that position. Did you check your bank accounts on line today? This is the first step in protecting your hard earned cash. In light of the conversations about reforming Royal Mail I offer the following .... There needs to be a complete overall of the 6-days per week Universal Service Obligation (USO). One price to everywhere must stay. But I would be happy to sacrifice 6-daily deliveries in return for a service that actually delivered 95%+ as promised (and not just 75% as we have now). I propose dropping First and Second Class for Individually Posted Items (IPIs) but maintaining discounted rates for pre-sorted 'business mail'. I propose going to alternate-day-deliveries. Each postie does round A on Mon/Wed/Fri and round B on Tues/Thur/Sat. This increases the number of items delivered on each visit thus reducing the delivery cost per item. The delivery standard would be 95% of IPIs on the next delivery day (given a 1 or 2 day service). Businesses can choose the same service as IPIs for important items and the following delivery day (i.e 3 or 4 day service) for discounted mail. In terms of recruiting new posties - the new contracts for "postal delivery posties" would not require Sunday working which is now almost standard for new employees (as this is needed for the Parcels service) and is clearly a major stumbling block for some people. Working 8am to 3pm is quite attractive for people who have school age children, but Sunday working is a no-no.
