Disconnect 3 million m2 of roofs from the sewers to stop sewage overflows to the natural environment. If there were an Animal Party, this would certainly be their top priority. In reality, it's one of the 29 propositions we're putting forth for the 2024 elections, aimed at fostering cleaner and greener waterways. Every year, 10 million m3 of sewage water pollutes the waterways in Brussels through sewage overflows because rainwater is guided directly into the sewers. We need to disconnect roofs, streets and squares from the sewers to infiltrate the rain into the ground, to reuse it and to slow it down. This could end sewage overflows altogether. Windermere’s Water Quality: Invertebrate Insights Presentation | Dr Sam Green | WildFish |🗣️ WildFish in collaboration with Save Windermere formed a SmartRivers hub in 2023 to begin surveying the freshwater invertebrate populations on the rivers and becks feeding into Lake Windermere. This project aimed to get a clearer picture of the ecological health of the Windermere catchment, and in particular how water company assets could be impacting biodiversity and water quality. Chloride. A main ingredient in road deicers and an emerging threat to freshwater. When you are white-knuckling it down the highway and facing oncoming transports, the last thing on your mind is their potential impact. Did you know that chloride concentrations have been increasing in many waterbodies/watercourses near urbanized areas across North America? And, did you know that some watershed concentrations are exceeding a level that could be harmful to aquatic life and ecosystem structure/functioning (i.e., 120 mg/L; or lower if there are endangered or special concern freshwater mussels in the watershed)? [Note: The monthly median chloride concentrations of tertiary watersheds were calculated and displayed. Approximately 4% of the calculated values were >160 mg/L so they were set to the colour gradient scale maximum.
