When developed with intention, dual enrollment provides learners with much more than just standalone academic credit. It helps them take the first steps on their specific journey into postsecondary education and their careers. Over the past year, we had the opportunity to participate in conversations on national pathways to ensure young people have equitable access to postsecondary opportunities that lead to good careers. Facilitated by Bellwether, participating organizations dedicated to equity, education, and career pathways focused on innovative policy solutions for issues in the field today. Advance CTE partnered with Jobs for the Future (JFF) and the College in High School Alliance to develop federal policy recommendations for shifting the role of dual enrollment in a learner’s education journey from a fragmented offering to a focused value add. These recommendations include data and accountability, new policy language, leveraging funding, systems alignment, and more. We know that isn’t how people learn. It’s encouraging to see innovation, organizations thinking differently about competency-based learning, and more. Yet as long as these bright spots exist only in pockets, they will further exacerbate rather than combat inequity. “Too Essential to Fail” brings together a preponderance of evidence from disparate sources that combined gives us the confidence we need to create  “a new education architecture that leverages the full complement of community resources needed to empower and support learners for life, work, and civic engagement.”

Today, we’re excited to share our vision for policy changes that will transform essential skills education in England in alignment with the new government’s mission for education.   The government wants to ensure that every child and young person benefits from a broad, complete education that not only builds literacy, numeracy and knowledge, but also the wider experiences and essential skills to thrive.   It’s this very vision that Skills Builder Partnership has been building towards over the past 15 years.   Working with over 900 partners across education and employment and reaching more than 2.5 million individuals last year, we’ve drawn on our collective experience and evidence of building essential skills at scale across the whole life journey by using a consistent language and model known as the Universal Framework.   Our new paper for policymakers, Essential Skills at Scale, provides a roadmap for scaling high-impact approaches to teaching and assessing essential skills in schools and colleges in England.   If we can make these changes, then one day, every child and young person can build the essential skills to succeed. What's in a state strategic plan anyway? State boards of education develop strategic plans to set long-term goals for K-12 education. But, our new analysis reveals a shift toward learning recovery and other pandemic-related issues. We feature Missouri and Washington's work, among other states. In a recent Office Hours, Missouri state board member Pamela Westbrook-Hodges noted: “As we moved through the pandemic … we looked at the plans and challenges, and saw a disconnect. Across the country, states are moving to more student-centered, equitable, and competency-based education systems because the legacy model for educating our young people is not working. This new PACE commentary by Roman Stearns of Scaling Student Success provides guidance for how to advance real change towards education that centers students by promoting 1) competency-based education, 2) experiential learning, 3) a whole child vision, 4) measurement of durable skills, and 5) decreased use of standardized tests for assessment. https://lnkd.in/gE-A_H8x
