💡Great insights from Orlando Bravo, founder and managing partner of Thoma Bravo, on the state of private equity in the enterprise software market. Key takeaways: 📊 On the sell side: While mid-performing companies struggle to receive compelling offers, top companies remain attractive to strategics, who are less sensitive to interest rates than PEs. ⏳ Selling companies takes as much time as buying (it can take 3-5 years to build a pipeline). ❄️ The PE industry is largely frozen, with few new deals closing due to challenges in portfolio companies. 🔧 As a result, PEs are focusing on their portfolio companies' operations - cutting costs to boost margins, reassessing leadership, and aligning stakeholder interests are key priorities. 📉 Many companies are overleveraged due to slower growth creating a refinancing risk. 💸 Valuations for profitable companies remain fairly high (around 30x PER), while non-profitable ones can drop as low as 1-2x revenue. 🤖 GenAI will disrupt enterprise software companies that primarily aggregate reports/data. For those offering mission-critical products, GenAI will enhance their value proposition. #PE #Enterprisesoftware
Great sitting down with CNBC's Sara Eisen and Carl Quintanilla last week at the NYSE to discuss PE's deal environment, market trends, valuations, generative AI and Thoma Bravo's focus on operational excellence across our portfolio.
