In this video I share on how we can deal with the culture of shame in Africa. It was inspired by Bovi Ugboma’s (a popular Nigerian comedian) session at the Daystar Excellence in Leadership Conference in 2023. If I try to summarize what he said in his speech I would say, we live in a society where people are looking for ways to shame others or trying to avoid being shamed. This tendency to shame or be shamed is costing us the authenticity that adds colour to our lives and society. We are raising a generation that have to ‘fake it until they make it’. We are playing around a keg of gunpowder filled with a sense of low self esteem and a lack of confidence. There’s an identity crisis brewing amongst young Africans; we need to act fast and take bold actions in preserving our identities and cultural heritage. I recently watched a profoundly inspiring speech by Mmusi Maimane , leader of Build One South Africa. Regardless of where our individual beliefs or political loyalties lie, there's an undeniable truth in his message: the vision of a South Africa brimming with hope, unity, and optimism. Maimane paints a picture of a future that I not only believe in but am also committed to contributing towards. He speaks of a South Africa that transcends racial divisions, a nation that thrives on equality, innovation, and shared prosperity. This is the South Africa we can all aspire to; a country that stands as a beacon of what’s possible when we come together for a common purpose. The time is now to invest in this vision. It's not just about financial investment, but investing our efforts, our ideas, and our passions into making South Africa the envy of the world – a place marked by a non-racial, dynamic, and flourishing economy. I encourage everyone, not just South Africans, to invest in this future, to believe in it, and to contribute to its realization. Great things are on the horizon for our nation. Let's be a part of that change. Here are four tips that I use with my clients: 🧩 Be holistic and representative in your planning team. 🧩 Use collaborative approaches that nurture dialogue and create long-term solutions. 🧩 Build community through solutioning and action planning. 🧩 Believe in your people and challenge them to provide expertise and input to problem-solving.
