At the Colorado Safety Net Collaborative, we often talk about culturally competent care. Culturally competent care is critical to improving outcomes for marginalized populations, but many people still aren’t familiar with what cultural competency entails. Culturally competent healthcare considers a person’s beliefs, culture, values, and background. Providers who offer culturally competent care will personalize healthcare to account for these differences. A person’s background could influence the language they want to use with providers, their preferences around care, their understanding of symptoms and conditions, and who they want involved in their healthcare decisions. With culturally competent care, we can ensure that patients feel heard and get the care they need. Culturally competent care isn’t a far-off dream; it’s happening all around Colorado. We’re proud to say that our clinics already offer culturally competent care for the communities they serve. Public Policy Institute of California's policy brief, "Health Conditions and Healthcare among California’s Undocumented Immigrants" was recently released, pulling 4 years of data in over 5.4 million visits to 350 community health centers (CHCs) surveying 369,891 individuals. Some Noteworthy Highlights: 🟢 Undocumented patients are 20% less likely than other low-income patients to make preventive visits, such as an annual checkup, for such reasons as immigration-related fears and lack of insurance. 🟢 Many undocumented immigrants manage trauma related to migration, domestic violence, or war in their home countries. Among undocumented patients, visits are much more likely (36%) to be for behavioral health than among other low-income patients around California, especially among those 26 to 49 and older. In LA County, young adults are 70% more likely. 🟢 Clinics would benefit from resources to hire more staff, especially bi- or multilingual staff. While 57% of undocumented study members statewide prefer to communicate in Spanish, 43% of telehealth users have a Spanish preference. 🟢 Expanding telehealth may ease some barriers to care; tutorials or hands-on assistance from trusted nonprofits can help get patients comfortable with telehealth technology. We spoke to more than 20 doctors on these topics and discussed the following: About Inter Health Services Our Services Success Stories and Case Studies Collaborative Approach for Partnership Funding and Referral Options Key Points: Understanding Diversity: Emphasised the importance of collecting demographic data to better understand and cater to the needs of culturally diverse patients. Cultural Sensitivity: Raised concerns about cultural awareness and sensitivity. Mental health professionals shared experiences working with patients from African backgrounds, highlighting the need for tailored support. Inclusive Care: Stressed the importance of considering cultural differences in healthcare to provide effective and inclusive care. Action Items: Library Services: Improve library services for diverse patrons, including enhancing cultural awareness and providing comprehensive staff training. Feedback Gathering: plans to gather feedback on improving the centres. Expert Insights: shared their extensive background in psychology, social work, and mental health science. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, America has faced a dire labor shortage in the healthcare sector, which will only worsen in the future; the American Hospital Association predicts a shortage of over 3.2 million healthcare workers by 2026. Meanwhile, in states like Illinois, more than 11,000 internationally trained medical professionals are un- or underemployed. At Upwardly Global, we have worked with hundreds of internationally trained medical professionals as they restart their careers in the United States. To date, we have supported more than 850 healthcare workers with foreign credentials, over 730 of whom have secured full-time work in their field and more than 120 having been matched to residency positions.
