"So, is that like insetting?" Just posted the piece below, in which I try to define and distinguish offsetting, insetting, decarbonization and emissions reductions. And, set the table for some spicier arguments - for example, that SAF is closer to insetting and offsetting than it is to emissions reductions. https://lnkd.in/e3vVAaVM

The document reviewed by Reuters states that “higher quality empirical and observational evidence suggests that some or most emission reduction credits are ineffective in delivering emissions reductions.” All the reporting on the SBTi and offsets that I have seen fails to make some important basic points and distinctions. What are they talking about? This article claims it is about all offsets and voluntary credits, but the quote appears to be specifically about emission reduction credits. And the examples seem to largely be from reduced deforestation (= reduced emissions) projects. VCM credits cover: emission reduction projects/credits, emission avoidance projects/credits and carbon removal credits (biosphere/short-term, geosphere/long-term). The SBTi review is NOT (only) about offsets but about Environmental Attribute Certificates. It specifically excludes removal credits (to be covered elsewhere/separately) and includes certificates for eg renewable energy, green hydrogen, green gas, etc. If suppliers (scope 3) claim to have purchased their steel (for the product that a company is buying) from a 'green steel' (low carbon steel) supplier should they be able to use lower scope 3 emissions for the product they are buying? If you buy gas/methane with a 'green gas' certificate should you be able to use lower GHG emissions for the use of that gas? etc, etc. See the original consultation document & request for input (pg 4 specifically): https://lnkd.in/ebgZnqX4

As an engineer, I've always been intrigued by the Pareto Principle, where 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Under this principle, efficient emission mapping should help identify the main leverage points for change. With the Earth's first twelve months in a row above the 1.5°C threshold, it is imperative to cut the major sources of emissions. In this blog, I focus on Scope 3 emissions, the importance of properly measuring them and how businesses can begin to address them.
