What is the value of responsible forest stewardship for biodiversity?     Two years ago, we launched an initiative to fast-track Biodiversity Assessments in FSC-certified forests. Together with WWF, IKEA, and other partners, we have been working to enhance the understanding and monitoring of the effects of FSC certification on biodiversity.    Today, on #COP16 Forest Day, we share the initial findings that indicate positive impacts of FSC certification:   🌿 In Brazilian FSC-certified plantations and their set-asides, we identified over 300 threatened species—primates, reptiles, plants, birds, and large mammals.   🌿 In Finland, FSC certification is associated with a large increase in area (460%) dedicated to conservation, compared to the conservation area set by law.  🌿In Sweden, key forest indicators and red-listed species have remained stable in certified forests over the past two decades.  🌿FSC-attributable set-aside areas enhance forest connectivity in both Brazilian and Finnish landscapes.    Learn more about the findings and the project here: https://lnkd.in/e2sgUMaQ   Come talk to us at COP 16 to learn how FSC sets the gold standard for biodiversity protection in certified forests! //Photos by iStock, FSC/ Jonathan Perugia #COP16Colombia #PeaceWithNature #ForestsForAllForever 

Primary forests cover approximately 1.11 billion hectares globally and are vital for sustaining terrestrial biodiversity, with at least two-thirds of the world's biodiversity depending on these ecosystems. There is a need for strategic communication and capacity development to enhance the visibility and inclusion of primary forests in conservation and financing strategies. Against this backdrop, CIFOR-ICRAF joined the 19th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF19), where global environmental and development organizations convened to address the urgent need to strengthen the conservation of primary forests worldwide. During the event, Robert Nasi, CIFOR-ICRAF COO, highlighted the urgent need for policy coherence on forest conservation. "You cannot conserve primary forests in a vacuum. They are part of a global landscape, and what happens in the landscape will influence what happens in the primary forest." To preserve them, we must strengthen partnerships, expand financing pathways, raise the visibility of these ecosystems, and push for international policy coherence. Breaking: A Marine Biodiversity Corridor just got protected in Peru! Peru has officially approved the creation of the Grau Tropical Sea National Reserve, marking a significant milestone in marine biodiversity protection. This long-awaited initiative aims to safeguard unique ecosystems and ensure sustainable marine resource use. Ecological Significance: Biodiversity Hotspot: The reserve encompasses a variety of marine ecosystems that are home to numerous species of fish, corals, marine sponges, and echinoderms. It serves as a feeding ground and refuge for migratory species like sea turtles and whale sharks. Unique Habitats: Each sector within the reserve has distinct ecological features. For example, Máncora Bank, an underwater ravine, supports deep marine upwellings that bring nutrients to the surface, fostering rich marine life. Threatened Species: The area is crucial for the conservation of threatened species, including several types of marine mammals and commercially important fish species. Marine Ecosystem Services: The reserve supports vital ecosystem services such as fisheries, which are crucial for local communities, and contributes to global biodiversity. Ecological Focus: The Grau Tropical Sea National Reserve's focus on protecting migratory routes for large marine species like whale sharks and sea turtles. Initiative Leaders: Driven by environmental organizations, scientists, and government agencies, with significant contributions from Oceana and Mission Blue. Timeline: Over a decade in the making, with the final approval in 2024 after extensive consultations and political commitment. Size: Spanning 115,675 hectares (285,840 acres) across Punta Sal reefs, Cabo Blanco–El Ñuro, Foca Island, and Máncora Bank. Methodology & Funding: Supported by international conservation grants, including Ocean 5, focusing on marine spatial planning and sustainable management practices. Great work from the team here and for all the NGOs who have helped on the collection of this date. 🌍📉 Biodiversity at risk: Decline of common bird populations in the EU 📉🌍 Birds are sensitive to environmental pressures, making them key indicators of the health of our environment. Long-term monitoring across the EU shows a troubling decline in bird populations: 🔹 168 common birds: 14% decrease between 1990 and 2022 🔹 Farmland birds: 40% decrease 🔹 Forest birds: 3% decrease Despite efforts, reversing these declines by 2030 seems unlikely. Agricultural intensification, habitat loss, and other human-driven factors are putting enormous pressure on these species. To turn the tide, EU Member States must scale up existing conservation efforts and implement new restoration measures. The EU’s new Nature Restoration Law sets the stage for this work, but much more is needed to safeguard biodiversity. To address these issues and truly protect Asia’s rich biodiversity, a multi-pronged approach is required. FSC and Biodiversity. Yesterday I was lucky enough to participate in this panel about FSC’s forest management impact on biodiversity with great speakers, Joeri Zwerts, Franck Trolliet and Prudence Galega. I got the chance to explain our experience managing different ecosystem services through FSC’s ecosystem services procedure and what learnings this has brougth us. We currently have 7 claims in three categories: biodiversity conservation, recreational services, and watershed services. In biodiversity conservation, we have 4 procedures in Argentina and 1 in Chile. In Argentina we conserve riparian forest of the Lower Delta of the Paraná River, which is the southernmost subtropical natural forest formation. We also have three associated with threatened species: “Jaguar”, “Marsh Deer”, and “Jucara”. In Chile, we have in place a procedure related to the South Andean deer or “Huemul”, the southernmost deer specie on the planet. Finally, we have one claim associated with water provision to communities in “Forel”, and another claim related to recreational use of the forest in “Parque Oncol”, both in Chile. Lessons learned: Collaborative work is key. Partnerships with civil society, academia and local governments are essential to increase the impact of conservation actions in the landscape. Continuous improvement teaches how to modify some management practices that allow to mantain and improve the target services. "A study published in the journal One Earth explores how marine biodiversity conservation, human health and well-being are connected. The results suggest that marine protected areas can be good for both planet and people. These areas of the ocean are legally recognized by governments as being important for marine conservation. They are protected by putting limits on human activity within and around them. Once a government declares a marine protected area, you usually can't live in it, fish, build a beach resort, start a fish farm or drill for oil in it. The rules vary from place to place, but the idea is to allow nature to flourish by limiting human activity as much as possible." #oceanhealth #humanhealth
