I've had a lot of great conversations in the past few months about why I have chosen to pursue a career in presales, and how the skills that I've developed to this point in my career as a quality engineer and leader translate into a sales/solutions engineer role. It's pretty common for software engineers to move into these roles, but I think quality engineers can be an even better fit, and here's why: ⚾ Teamwork: Great SEs, like QEs, work happily as a trusted teammate, supporting a larger effort, but not controlling it. 💲 Identifying Value: Great SEs understand the user perspective and value to the prospect in order to sell the right capabilities, just as QE's identify and test the highest priority use cases to ensure the product meets the user's needs. 🖥 Technical Aptitude: Great SE's understand technical concepts and architecture to sell effectively, even if they don't implement the solution, much like how QE's understand enough to test but not build the solution. 🎨 Creativity: Great SE's think creatively to get in the mind of the user and tell stories to connect, just as QE's get creative to discover the very best test cases that no one will think of but the users. 👫 Social Skills: Great SE's find ways to connect with prospects and gain trust through through expertise, leading them to the right solution, much like QE's gain the trust of their team when they uncover hidden bugs, improving the quality of their application. What do you think? What are some other traits and skills that SE's need to be successful? #presales #salesengineering #solutionsengineering

Senior SC @ Homerun Presales ⚾️ | Building the future of Sales Engineering 🚀 | Diary of Sales Engineer 🦆 | Career Advisor for Presales Academy
"I am looking to transition into Sales Engineering..." 🤔 I've received countless messages from people looking to break into sales engineering. Here are the top three qualities you need to succeed in this field(you need at least 2/3 to break into Sales Engineering): 🦆 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲: - Understanding the specific domain your solution is working in is crucial. - This allows you to speak the language of your buyers and translate their needs to your internal product team. - Example: If you're selling a product for accountants, you should be familiar with accounting terminology and concepts(PO Matching, Chart of Accounts, etc) 🦆 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲: - Being able to answer technical questions is essential as a sales engineer. - You should have a deep understanding of how the engine is built and be able to confidently answer any questions from technical clients. - Even if you don't know the answer, you should be able to ask meaningful questions to get a better understanding. 🦆 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻: - At the end of the day, our primary goal is to close revenue. - You need to have some sales chops to do that, including being able to connect with the customer, build trust, handle objections, and understand their needs. - You should be able to focus your demos on addressing the customer's needs and get creative to keep them engaged. When I first transitioned into sales engineering from software engineering, I had the 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 and 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻. I then became a 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 while on the job, learning about my customer and how to speak their language. To my current SE rockstars, anything else you'd add to help out those looking to get into the best job ever? To my future SEs, what are other questions you have? #ducklife #salesengineering #presales #careeradvice
