THIS is one of the many reasons why #nursingeducation programs cannot expand student numbers to address the #nursingshortage. "'The simple reality is that, though we love DSU Nursing and want to help it survive, we cannot spend over half a million dollars in compensation expenses for 16 Registered Nurses. That does not work financially,' Easton said, referring to the program's economic output." Nurses average about $90K plus benefits per year...at least that's the Minnesota average. Just to do the math, that half a million would pay the salaries, but not the benefits, for about 5 and a half RNs with a bachelor's degree. Not 16 RNs. And definitely not 16 RNs with graduate degrees (required to teach, for the most part). If we pay high wage professionals lower to get a graduate degree and teach future professionals, we will have no teachers. Which means we will have no nurses. We need state government assistance to fund high wage, high need, faculty in a different way so that colleges and universities can afford to teach the future professionals we all need for a healthy America. https://lnkd.in/gAzwpNmr

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of collaborating with the Student Nurses of Arizona to facilitate their midyear event hosted at Alliant International University in Phoenix, AZ. The focus was on mentorship and networking. The day was enriched with profound insights and inspiration, a testament to the dedication of all participants. I extend my deepest gratitude to my colleagues Jasmine Bhatti, Delaney Sanders, and Lacy Garth whose experience and expertise significantly enriched the learning environment for the attendees . Special appreciation for the phenomenal representatives from the Black Nurses Association and Hispanic Nurses Association. Their discussions on the mentorship opportunities provided by their organizations were enlightening. Moreover, the infectious enthusiasm displayed by members from specialty organizations including Medical-Surgical Nursing, Emergency Nurses, and Perioperative Nurses Associations underscored the diverse pathways within our profession and the robust support network that fosters our collective advancement. Alongside my co-consultant, Cheryl Schmidt, I had the honor of addressing critical themes such as resume construction and the nuances of online networking—indispensable tools for burgeoning careers in nursing. One of the highlights of the event was the series of engaging dialogues that followed our sessions, particularly those prompted by the question, "How has mentorship changed your career?" These discussions not only illuminated the transformative impact of mentorship but also its essential role in shaping nursing careers. So I ask: How has mentorship influenced your career? The education attainment gap for care leavers is well documented and, sadly, it only widens with age. In 2021, it was found that just 6% of care leavers in England were in higher education, compared to 37.9% of the entire 18-year-old-population starting a full time undergraduate course in the same period. Care experienced young people deserve better, and that's why new programmes like this are so important. The University of Roehampton has launched a new programme designed to make healthcare careers accessible to young care leavers. The I-CAN programme will run as a 12-month pilot scheme supporting care experienced 18-to-29-year-olds through a paid learning pathway. As a #nurse who left the bedside to pursue a career in #simulation #education, I personally feel like I've been part of the problem AND the #solution (leaning heavily on the latter I hope). What is really tough is that not only do we have terrible #nurse #turnover, but admissions and interest in joining the #nursing #profession are taking a dip now too! I've spoken with so many #faculty who are similarly #burningout because they don't have enough staff. Another article I read suggests that may be one of the reasons the admissions started to dip (willing students being turned away) but now the same reasons nurses are turning over (#burnout, #salary, #career) are also the reasons students aren't applying and faculty are leaving. There are so many ways #virtualreality can support our #nurses, #students and #faculty but it feels like there's something bigger underlying this long-standing issue. Will we ever be "out" of the #nursingcrisis?

The American education system is being called out for not adequately preparing students for skills-based jobs that don’t require a 4-year degree. There are a few programs across the nation that train students to earn the skills and credentials needed to start a career as soon as they graduate from high school. For example, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) provides a practical nursing program on limited high school campuses, partnering with hospital systems and skilled nursing facilities. Students enter this program in the 11th grade, learning the foundations of nursing and earning clinical hours. By the end of the first year of the program, students are eligible to test for their Certified Nursing Assistant credential (CNA) and begin working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of Illinois. By the end of their second year of the program (12th grade), the students can sit for the NCLEX (National Councl Licensure Examination) and earn their License of Practical Nursing. Graduating students have the option to start their career as an LPN right away. Graduates have eventually gone on to further their nursing education. It’s no secret that we are in a nursing shortage. Programs like this are essential to providing relief to the healthcare industry, with skilled and qualified nurses as well as giving young individuals an opportunity to enter the workforce with a promising career. Because healthcare is an industry that’s in need of skilled workers, Bloomberg Philanthropies has launched a new program partnering with healthcare-focused schools across the country, to help place high school graduates into in-demand roles. Education advocates like Karin Kimbrough have been leading the charge, focusing on labor trends, to identify what skills students need to thrive and prepare them for the real world.
