When it comes to AI, “we (Latinos) need to be at the table.” - Dr. José Morey mentioned during the insightful virtual panel discussion hosted by the Latino Donor Collaborative (LDC) yesterday titled “Riding the AI Wave: Opportunities in Today's Transformative Landscape.” The panel kicked off with Guillermo Diaz Jr explaining that Latinos are the “growth engine of the U.S.”, which is why it’s imperative that we are part of shaping the AI industry. #AI has inherent biases based on the data it’s trained on and while models continue to improve, Ana Valdez stressed why it's important that we, Latinos, help contribute relevant cultural data to ensure accuracy and representative results. A personal highlight was when Marcelo De Santis explained that due to the rise of generative AI and its potential negative influence on news, there is an opportunity and demand for new media companies that reflect our diverse stories. Given that my mission with the Minority Majority newsletter is to help people stay informed on the business, culture, and social impact of US Latinos–it’s reassuring to hear that there is a growing need for this work. The consensus among the panelists was clear: while AI presents challenges, it also offers unprecedented opportunities for growth and representation in industries where Latinos have historically been underrepresented. This event was the third in a series of nine seminars the LDC is planning on AI. "Queerness and queer people face an uncertain future in the face of ever more widely deployed and invasive artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies have caused numerous harms to queer people, including privacy violations, censoring and downranking queer content, exposing queer people and spaces to harassment by making them hypervisible, deadnaming and outing queer people. More broadly, they have violated core tenets of queerness by classifying and controlling queer identities. In response to this, the queer community in AI has organized Queer in AI, a global, decentralized, volunteer-run grassroots organization that employs intersectional and community-led participatory design to build an inclusive and equitable AI future. In this paper, we present Queer in AI as a case study for community-led participatory design in AI. We examine how participatory design and intersectional tenets started and shaped this community’s programs over the years. We discuss different challenges that emerged in the process, look at ways this organization has fallen short of operationalizing participatory and intersectional principles, and then assess the organization’s impact. Queer in AI provides important lessons and insights for practitioners and theorists of participatory methods broadly through its rejection of hierarchy in favor of decentralization, success at building aid and programs by and for the queer community, and effort to change actors and institutions outside of the queer community. Finally, we theorize how communities like Queer in AI contribute to the participatory design in AI more broadly by fostering cultures of participation in AI, welcoming and empowering marginalized participants, critiquing poor or exploitative participatory practices, and bringing participation to institutions outside of individual research projects. Queer in AI’s work serves as a case study of grassroots activism and participatory methods within AI, demonstrating the potential of community-led participatory methods and intersectional praxis, while also providing challenges, case studies, and nuanced insights to researchers developing and using participatory methods." #Queer #AI #design #justice #harm #ethics #inclusion https://lnkd.in/e6yZ8kZp

According to UNCTAD's Creative Economy Outlook 2024, creative industries are seeing a shift in how creative work is developed and consumed. Leveraging digitalisation and AI, creative work, for example the art scene in African has become more cost-efficient, reaching a wider audience, with deeper level of transparency. This new reality entails essential policy challenges and responses in the creative economy. Can AI help us get along? Fascinating article in Ars Technica https://lnkd.in/eFT-6SpW It describes a study by Google DeepMind published in Science Magazine where the AI did better than human mediators in achieving (some) consensus. Social media has been known to stoke divisions and it is exciting that this application of technology has the potential to bring people together.
