This is an interesting article about 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 in hiring 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀. Want to get noticed by more recruiters and firms? Update your firm bio. I see too many lawyers whose bios read someone along these lines: “Joe is an attorney in the complex litigation group.” There’s no information about Joe’s practice area, his experience, or his representative matters. Recruiters and firms find lawyers based on keywords in your firm bio. Joe would appear in every single litigation search, regardless of his specialty and expertise. Maybe Joe is a litigator who focuses on representing shareholders in derivative actions. No one, including recruiters, would know that based on Joe’s firm bio. And, more likely than not, Joe’s pleadings are not easily accessible to the public, so a discerning recruiter cannot search for Joe on Google to get a better understanding of what Joe does. With his scanty bio, Joe will get spammed by recruiters for every single litigation search in his region without actually being targeted for searches that would actually fit his experience and interests. An updated bio is a way for you to market yourself so recruiters and firms can approach you, rather than forcing you to go out and seek a recruiter or wait for a recruiter to reach out with an opportunity that aligns with your experience and preferences. It can also cut down on outreach you receive that is of no interest to you. In other words, it’s a way for you to solicit interesting opportunities passively. It behooves you to know what’s going on in the job market because things at your firm can change quickly and you may suddenly be looking for new opportunities. It’s better to understand what’s out there before that happens than to scramble once conditions change. Are your lateral partner hires secretly regretting their move? Many law firm partners who make a lateral move don't have a clear grasp of the unwritten rules of success at their new firms—and their new firms don't have clue about that. That’s a recipe for failure. Lauren Krasnow, executive coach and consultant to the legal industry observes that “The two to three years in which it takes most firms to write off new laterals as ‘underperforming’ is the same two to three years in which laterals fester with concerns that they are (rationally) afraid to voice.” She dissects several problems she sees with lateral partner recruitment and integration success here: https://buff.ly/3VlZLlG Her overarching recommendation: overcommunicate. Law firms and Candidates. This is a quick read on the Universal Lateral Partner Questionnaire (U-LPQ) adopted by NALSC last year and being adopted by law firms nationally.

Oakstreet Attorney Search made it to one year in business! I love what I do, and I can’t express enough my gratitude to the attorneys and law firms who put their trust in me. I have big goals for the future, but I took some time to reflect on three things that I learned this first year: 1️⃣ Your competitors can be some of your greatest allies and resources. I have a better network now than I’ve ever had of quality recruiters to ask questions or to refer clients/candidates, when I may not have the expertise they're looking for. There’s plenty of work to be done, and more roles to be filled than there are quality recruiters. If you want to practice space law in another country, I may not be your guy, but I can likely find you the right recruiter. 2️⃣ A bigger firm is not always a better firm. This definitely applies to recruiting, but I think it applies to law firms and companies in general. Coming from a large recruiting company, I now have more flexibility and autonomy to make decisions that lead to better outcomes for the attorneys and law firms I work with, and less pressure to meet arbitrary metrics. If I’m a recruiter whose value proposition is to focus on relationships rather than transactions, this is a much better setup. If you’re a smaller business competing in another industry, find your advantages. 3️⃣ If you have a big goal, don’t try to tackle it all at once. Just chip away at it, day by day, and then after a year or so, look back and you’ll be surprised at what you’ve accomplished.
