The United Nations General Assembly designated February 20th as the annual World Day of Social Justice, starting from the sixty-third session of the General Assembly, in a declaration made on November 26, 2007. There are five main principles of social justice that are paramount to understanding the concept better. Today is the first day of #HumanRightsMonth. Following the death, despair and complete disregard of human lives during World War II, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The #DEI conversation is incomplete without a clear understanding of human rights. The international amplification around anti-violence, anti-discrimination, #equality and social justice brought about by human rights awareness, plays a key role in shaping DEI values. The World has just celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights — a document that is much more than a cornerstone of international law: it is a guide to navigate a deeply divided world, a set of values that everyone can live by, and ultimately a force for good. And yet, we know that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” represents a promise not yet fulfilled — for LGBTIQ+ people across the world, and for everyone experiencing the suffocating impact on their lives of diverse layers of inequalities. This year’s IDAHOBIT theme is a call for unity: only through solidarity for each other will we create a world without injustice, where no one is left behind.

I left X (formerly known as Twitter) earlier this year. I had 3K followers, and had spent 10 years building a network and my platform as a non-profit leader, #feminist, historian, and advocate for #socialjustice. But as a bisexual + neurodivergent cis woman, I saw how that space stopped being a productive and healthy use of my time. I saw harassment rapidly increasing, and given that one of my main issues is health equity for those who identify as women, it became extremely toxic 🙅♀️ I hope to see more #nonprofit organizations and colleagues leaving X over the next year. It’s not serving us to give that space our best thoughts and energy. I used to be able to connect with activists and academics across the world on there, but now? Everything that made it work for me is gone. If it’s not safe for #2SLGBTQIA+ community members, it’s not safe for any of us.
